AN AFTERNOON IN PORT DICKSON

I could live here. I love the movement of the waves in the sea.

In Starbucks, relaxing after the drive.

The drive up from Subang Jaya was crowded with traffic on the highway, right up until after Seremban. Then, it was clear right up to P. D. town.

The last time we were in P. D. was in February. Jeannie and I had a great time then. We are looking forward to a great weekend here.

One of the first times we noticed when we got in was that the town seemed pretty quiet for a Saturday afternoon. After all, this is supposed to be a tourist and holiday getaway for people around this area. However, we are not complaining. It is more comfortable this way.

We drove around town, remembering the places we visited in our past trips here. The town is growing in size. There are more modern amenities and eateries available now. Our favourite, Billion Supermarket is still there, going strong, faithfully serving the needs of the people of Port Dickson. We have purchased things from this establishment on several of our trips in the past. It is the place to go to. Probably to be seen at, too.

There were several cafes other than the usual Starbucks. However, Starbucks offers a great view of the sea, while sipping on our coffee beverages and pastries.

We (meaning Laura, though she let us decide) chose Starbucks at the Waterfront. Starbucks is one of Laura’s favourite cafes.

Starbucks at the Waterfront has a really nice view of the open sea of the Straits of Malacca. After ordering a coffee beverage, Jeannie chose a table next to the café’s wide frontage view.

The view was good from here. The sun was blazing, the reflection of its rays from the sea helped it look hotter than it was. All the same, it was very hot on its own, not needing help from the sea.

The sea was greenish / brown, coming in to shore, calmly. The smell of salt water in the air (OK… That’s a bit of exaggeration. Haha. My sense of smell is not tha-a-at sensitive) was over-powering, where clean, clear air, escaped my attention. However, it in no way deminishes the fact that this was a welcome scene instead of the gigantic (in some cases) concrete  buildings structures that seem to block out the skies in the cities, the traffic and so called urban modernisation of transport, leaving behind it’s harmful emissions, as well as unwanted noise crowds.

There were a couple of tug boats anchored, lazily about 100 metres from the shore; looking very Mexican siesta type, not in an immediate hurry to change the pace of their current lifestyle. If they had a choice, this would be it, year in, year out.

In the distance, over the horizon, we could see ships going up and down the Straits.

We spent a bit more time enjoying the comforts of Starbucks before we made a move to our hotel.

We got to the hotel within a few minutes. Our rooms were comfortable and inviting that the next thing we thought of doing was nothing. However, the white beach was beckoning us for a walk on it. Later… Maybe.

THE ROAD TO P.D

For as long as I can remember, the Batik Influencer kept turning on her charm to influence me to take her to the beach. And always, there was something that always seemed to clash with the dates we wanted to go; which weren’t many.

Then, Laura went to Port Dickson (P. D.) (1) with her friend for a wedding. And stayed for the night. And went to the beach the next morning. And spent some time there.

That set Jeannie’s sights to go the very next weekend, which is this weekend, the Chinese New Year hols. Laura booked us in last Tuesday….or was it Wednesday? Anyway, we were set.

Our Sunday itenary was to go for the 8.30am mass at St. Thomas More Church, then go for breakfast somewhere nearby and start our journey to P. D. at 11.00am.

Sunday (that is today), came. We went for the 8.30am. mass at St. Thomas More church. Check☑️I found mass quite entertaining… the Music Ministry…let’s just leave it at that.

We passed by a couple of Indian restaurants with the hope of having roti canai for breakfast. They were closed. On the second day of Chinese New Year! Can you beat that? One would think that they would capitalislze on all the Chinese coffee shops, kopitiams and restaurants that are closed because of the lunar holidays.

Then, we heard bagpipes being played in the distant background…no, our car is Japanese, not Scots. And the bagpipes…imaginary, as we decided on McD’s – reliable for being open everyday.

Jeannie had a “hash brown wrap”, something new to me,

We had a quick breakfast… The Batik Influencer ordered a “hash brown wrap” and iced coffee and I; a sausage with egg McMuffin and iced coffee. It was a quick breakfast. I wanted to go back home for a short rest before going on the fairly long drive. We anticipated that we were going to have more than our fair share of the blazing sun. To give some perspective, P. D. is closer to the earth’s equator than Subang Jaya (2). Hence, it definitely was going to be much hotter in weather temperature.

We started our journey at noon. As we got on the Seremban (3) highway intersection from the highway route that we got on from the Toll plaza, we got (3 “got” [s] ) smack into the usual jam at Nilai. It seems perpetual as any time of the day is a crawl. Got past that jam about half hour later and it was a breeze drive all the way for about 5 minutes.

Now, it was the Seremban traffic crawl heading down South, for as far as we could see. For those heading to Johore (4) and Singapore, you have my sympathy.

As we turned off to the P. D. highway, there were pockets of jams, all a few minutes each. Jeannie insisted we used Google maps and I said I knew the way. However, Google Maps showed the way that was shorter, at least on Google Maps itself. I decided to follow the electronic guide. We didn’t know what was in store for us next.

We followed the directions shown by Google Maps. It took us into one of the small Malay kampungs (villages in English). We went through some very narrow roads (more like dirt tracks) and very tight and bumpy turns. The map showed the sea was so close by.

I kept turning to look at the back seat to see if we picked up some chickens and goats. The movie, “SHADOWS IN THE SUN” was still very fresh on my mind where Welson Parrish drove and crashed the publisher’s car into a chicken coup.

We managed to get out of there without picking up any chickens or goats. If we had gone the way I knew, we could have avoided this “scenic” route.

Quite a long check-in line. We got our room pretty quick.
Welcome to Corus.
In a scarecrow straw hat, caught me at work.

The Batik Influencer said, at least now, I had a story to tell. Possible title, “HATTED WRITER’ S FEATHER IN THE HAT”.

A view from our room.

We’ve checked into our room. I chose to pen this down, while Jeannie does some office work. We’re waiting for the sun to go to the other side of the equator, at least a little bit, when the temperature outdoors will be cooler before venturing to the outdoors, itself; feeling the white sand and the wet sands of the beach, soaking in (that should be from the wetness of the seas of the Straits of Malacca) the many colours and hues of the sky, the sun and the many sounds of humans, enjoying the simple pleasures of life – playing on the beach and in the seas.

In the meantime, let’s make light and easy plans for galavnating around P. D..

This article would have been published earlier on in the evening, if not for it getting lost somewhere in the back office. I was going to launch it at the same time as the one just before this that was published. I had to seek my daughter, Laura’s help; to try and recover the article.

There must have been a clash of two articles because this which I wanted to publish as I had already seen the final draft, was launched at the same time as the previous article which meant both articles would have been published.

Long story short; I managed to retrieve it from another sector, had to modify it slightly and re-add the pictures in

THE LAST WEEKEND

OMG! OMG! OMG! (Abbreviated for “Oh My God! [Goodness! Gosh!] Choice of last word depends on which era you are from and the mood you are in. I leave it to your imagination.) It is the last weekend of the month of January 2024. How cool can that be?

… “Sailing” by Rod Stewart is coming over the air from somewhere in the distant background.

Almost at the very last moment (note that a moment is a shorter time than a second [unverified definition]), we were invited to participate in having a booth at Amcorp Shopping Mall for this weekend. We, meaning, Jeannie and I; decided on taking it.

We had just finished playing a boardgame, “Pictureka” with Laura (our daughter) and Praga (Laura’s boyfriend), when we received a message asking if we would like to take up the slot that became available at the very last minute.

Me, trying to syke the splitting headache that I have been having since I woke up this morning. Syke : using the happiness theory to overcome the throbbing or is it splitting headache? I can’t really decide.

The result: We are here, at Amcorp Shopping Mall, now; on the first floor at Booth F1.16. New area, new spot, new friends from the booths on the both sides of us. We are already well into the 5th hour.

Almost as soon as we opened with an invisible “WELCOME SIGN”, that the Batik Influencer managed to sell one of her creations.

I, on the other hand, according to Jeannie, who is also my image consultant; had to work on my image as a writer, while welcoming and making new friends, and finding new owners for my HOTWHEELS collection.

At work. Me, piecing this article together in between times when the front is quiet. Notice that my watch band matches my shirt.

So, with the hat on, a more writer’s image of a writer, do you think? Perhaps, the long awaited book-writing project will move with gusto?

The writer, caught in the act!!! Writing? Typing? Inputting? (If there is such a word), while the “coast” is clear (some quiet time).

A satisfied buyer, one who was very, very polite.

Jane of “Jane’s Cottage Soaps”

Jane of “Jane’s Cottage Soaps” (her own business, naturally), is one of the long time businesses of Amcorp Shopping Mall. Her products are unique, many of which she custom makes to meet the needs of her customers. She is an ardent reader of physical books (The ones where you need to turn / flip the pages. Serious readers can’t get enough of these physical books). I caught her in the act of reading a book, based on a true story writen by Ann Rule. Looking forward to her buying my book when it’s published. Btw, Jane was the only person in the row of booths, without an electronic gadget in her hands.

OK. Signing out for now. I’m thinking : Should I get a mechanical keys keyboard to add more writer to the writer? I wonder…
