SPARKS OF JOY – MEETING WITH OLD FRIENDS

The journey from Pee Jay or PJ or Petaling Jaya (in full) after picking Jeannie up from work to Shah Alam was a long one, right from the word “Go!”. So, we decided to grab early dinner. I have to clarify something.

Today, there are more words and phrases that mean more than what you actually intend to say. Here, when I say “grab”, I don’t mean call Grab service or “Grab our meals over to where we are”. I mean to say “get” early dinner. I can hear some of you ask, “Why didn’t he say just that? “Get” early dinner. I used the word “grab” to emphasize that we were in a hurry.

Yesterday, when Jeannie, Laura and I were heading (going, for some) to KFC in Sea Park (I think), we passed by a restaurant called “Seapark Dessert”. It brought back memories to Jeannie and me of some over 25 years ago. “Some Over” is a bit of a stylo description.

Over 25 years ago, Jeannie and I used to work in Kuala Lumpur. By time we finished work and waded through traffic jams, it would be over 9.00pm. So, we’d swing over to one of the eating places in PJ to have dinner. One of those places was “Seapark Dessert” , though at that time, we never really took notice of the name of the coffee shop (now “restaurant”). I love bubur pulut hitam, bubur kacang merah and bubur kacang hijau. And so does Jeannie. We’d usually have noodles for our main course and one of this bubur choices for dessert. It was the coffee shop that we often visited because they were usually open to late in the night. This place was very popular at that time. Many a time, we had to wait to get a table for ourselves.

So, passing this coffee shop yesterday gave me the idea to stop by there for dinner. We wondered if it was as good as the last time.

The restaurant looked pretty much the same as the last time. It was a sort of a split-level, and there were quite a few people already. The time was around 5.45pm.

Jeannie ordered Yam cake and bubur kacang hijau. Jeannie said the yem cake was really good. The texture, the taste, the freshness. I am not a sort of a “yam” person. I will take her word for it that it was really good. Jeannie has been in the food industry line for multiple years. She is one of the most qualified persons in terms of experience to give opinions on food.

Her bubur kacang hijau was quite nice. I had a couple of spoons full to taste it.

Jeannie’s order: Bubur Kacang Hijau and yam cake.

My order: Pulut Hitam and 2 curry puffs

The curry puff I ate was nice. It was quite large, tasty, but not spicy. “Spicy” in the Malaysian or Asian context usually means very hot. However, looking back at History during school days, the Portuguese, Dutch and English traders were drawn to this part of the world for its spices, like pepper, cloves and other spices. For the discerning food eater, he or she will be able to detect the spices, which includes but not limited to chili.

The bubur pulut hitam was nice. My mother set such a high standard for the bubur pulut hitam, bubur kacang merah and bubur kacang hijau she used to make. There was hardly ever a time that anyone would come close to how she used to make these desserts. But, we have to settle for what we can get now.

Yes, they are big, and tasty.

Before long, we hit the road and got to the Stadium Pusat Akuatik Selangor or Selangor Aquatic Stadium in Shah Alam, just after 7.00pm. Lots of good memories rushed back to Jeannie and I. This used to be our “first home” when Laura used to train and compete here as a swim athlete representing the state of Selangor as a state swimmer and as a club swimmer for PADE Supersharkz.

As we walked to the pool deck, we saw both Coach Ong Jin Kooi and Coach Mark Chua. Coach Ong was the first to greet us as we got on the pool deck. It was nice to see him after a long time. He looked just the same. Strict with the swimmers and also father to them.

Just like old times. Except that, in those days; we never thought of taking pictures of our food.

I thought I won’t know any of the current group of swimmers and I won’t recognise any of them. Surprisingly, there were quite a few swimmers who were just beginners some years back; who recognised us, especially me. They came up to say hello and ask how we were. One of the swimmers who was in Laura’s batch and is now amongst the fastest and most experienced in the country, George Ng; came up to say hello, too. He asked how we were. I think he is still connected to Laura on social media. Good to see him.

Finished. The meal was filling. One curry puff was meant to be given to an old friend that we were about to meet after dinner.

Coach Mark was all smiles to see us. It was a long time since we last connected. We sat down in the press room where we talked about old times. He remembered Laura’s 50m and 100m Breast, and 100 free times with accuracy. These are great coaches who are not just only interested in what their swimmers do at the pool and competitions, but also take a close interest in what they do away from the pool. There is that amazing bonding between coach and swimmers and vice versa.

We were happy to hear that Selangor did very well in the recently completed Malaysian International Age Group (MIAG) championships. Never one to take anything for granted, the coaches in the Selangor team, i.e. Coach Ong, Coach Mark, Coach Marilyn (Mark’s sister) and others; began preparing the swimmers again, to be at more than their best, both on deck and off deck.

We brought each other up to speed with where we are now.

Coach Mark and Coach Ong each obtained a copy of my just published book, SPARKS FOR JOY – SEIZE THE MOMENT. There are stories, articles and multiple pictures of Laura in her many years with her team swimmers and coaches.

The curry puff filling. It was quite tasty.

Coach Mark Chua, Laura’s competitive swim coach, who is also Selangor’s senior coach, PADE and Orca junior elite team coach, with his copy of SPARKS FOR JOY – SEIZE THE MOMENT.

This is supposed to be the “Let Loose / freestyle” photo.

THE WRITER AN INVENTOR?

maybe

One of the most innovative inventions of our time must be the camera. Here, “our time” would be taken to mean that we get to use this invention when we are here and alive.

In 1816, Frenchman Joseph Nicéphore Niépce invented the first photographic camera. (1) Think of it. We don’t just get up one morning and say to ourselves, “Today, I think I am going to invent something. Hmmmnn. What shall I invent?” And in Joseph Niépce’s life, “I think I want to invent an image capturing device. I will call it a camera. “Today, the camera comes in all shapes and sizes and used for almost everything. Yet, it does not seem to have even scratched the surface of its full potential.

How many of us think that we aren’t smart (enough) to invent something. Yet, many inventions are by accident or a stroke of luck. A good example is “velcro”. George de Mestral was a Swiss electrical engineer who invented the hook and loop fastener which he named Velcro.

Story has it that de Mestral’s clothing became entangled in a patch of burrs and, this led him to wonder what made it stick. Years of research followed, and in 1948 he invented Velcro. (1)

A close up of how velcro works.

Back to the camera. As I move closer to having my first book published, I have to create a recognizable “writer’s image”. The word “closer” here, is not so much as the distance between one object to another. Here, “closer” is in relation to time.

Funny how that is happening when a deadline has not been set. However, I am mentally preparing to meet a deadline, even though one has not been set. I am already visualising the next two books to be out in less than two years. But first, the first book.

I just realised that at any time, I always have three cameras with me. The most used camera is my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra which is more than just a decent camera. Rated as the best smartphone camera (and still is amongst the best) when it launched. The next camera is the one that comes with my Samsung Galaxy Z-Fold 5. It is right that amongst the best.

Insta360 Go 3 action camera

Then, I have the Insta 360 Go3 Action camera. It is so small, I thought it can do anything. It can. I just have not made the time to really use it.

All these cameras are helps towards the writing bit. So, I am well equipped as you can see. I take pictures of what I see and tell write about them.

Readers will read the books, articles, essays, stories from the writers. They will know what flows from the pen, computer keyboards, etc that comes from the mind of the writer, the creator. This means that the writer is always behind the pen; as an artist behind a paintbrush, which he “tells his story on canvas”.

While grabbing a fast dinner, I fooled around with the camera. I thought the background setting was just right – grey, red and black. I had my newest hat, a flat cap, (which is the lightest hat I have), on. As my mind wandered, I started shooting. It is absolutely fascinating to think that what the mind can think, we can conceive, make it happen…that is if we put our mind to it. Is the writer an inventor?

NOTES
1. A camera is an optical device that captures pictures that can be kept internally, sent to another place, or both. These visuals might be simple photos or moving images like videos or movies. vedantu.com
2. The name “velcro” – is a combination of ”velvet” and ”crochet,” the French word for hook It is made of two strips of nylon. On one strip is a pile made of tiny loops. The facing strip is covered with tiny nylon hooks. When pressed together the strips adhere, but they can easily be peeled apart and put together again. de Mestral eventually sold the world license for Velcro and lived on royalties and profits from his Swiss factory. nytimes.com

It Had To Be You

“To love somebody…to love somebody the way I love you…” coming over the “airwaves(?)” Bee Gees… and I am taken back to 1971, 1972, when the movie “S.W.A.L.K” was showing.

It was also the time when Susan B**l was the “Wow! The gorgeous Girl” that every guy could only watch from afar. She was 21, we 13. Her boyfriend drove her around in his brand new Ford Cortina 2000 GXL, we…many of us did not even own a bicycle. I saw her a few years ago…she was still a stunner. Oh…and she married her boyfriend of 1971, 1972.

Mid-way through the second day at Amcorp Shopping Mall. The crowds are in, full-swing, browsing, window-shopping (no windows here. We are an open booth😂), shopping.

By the time I got to typing, thinking, tinkering, screen-tapping (was about to use “thumping”. Leave it to your imagination), Bee Gees was over. Either I was a tad slow in typing, Bee Gees was taken off the air, or the song finished. I will go with the last option.

Looks good!

Jeannie has sold her latest creation to a very, very happy customer. She said she will be proudly wearing it during the coming soon Chinese New Year (lunar new year).

And I; I met with a journalist from a leading Malaysian newspaper. I decided to add more pizzaz to the fun I have in writing. I went for the new look.

The writer sporting the “serious Writer Image”.

Towards the end of last evening, at the closing stages of sales for the day; I remembered that there was a booth selling hats. I went looking for it and found it. The booth was on the west side (our booth is in the east wing), 1 floor above us. I saw a couple of hats I liked, one much more than the other. However, I did not want to hold back the hat seller from packing up for the day.

This is Mahmud, the specs and hats seller; with the writer wearing his newly acquired Panama hat.

Today, while I was eager to don a new look with the purchase of the new hat that I had yet to buy; we had a good number of people visiting our booth. Some were friends that we made in our previous outings here. I met an old La Salle Klang, schoolmate, Charles Thomas; too. He introduced me to his younger brother and a friend of his; both from La Salle Klang, too.

By the time I got going to get the hat I wanted, it was way into mid-afternoon. I met Mahmud, the specs & hat seller. He has an excellent selection of hats.

The hat, known as the “Panama hat” was still there. I tried it on again and confirmed it had to be you (the hat). The one I liked. I was sold.

If you are looking for a hat for any occasion, Mahmud’s the guy to see. He runs a booth on the 2nd Floor, East Wing.

My watch band matches my hat.

The Batik Influencer and the writer.

That famous Latino guy that plays the electric guitar looks like me, minus the moustache. Here I, the writer; am with my wife, Jeannie; the Batik Influencer.

While the hat itself has no. Magical powers, it sets the tone for new fun and conversations. For one, as I started wearing this hat, I noticed there were many others who wore hats, too. I mean, besides the common sight of those sporting baseball caps, there were many others who wore hats of all shapes and sizes.

Before we knew it, it was time for us to pack up and head for home. Not everything had gone the way we would have liked it to. I believe that the biggest takeaway Jeannie and I had this weekend was that we made more new friends.

Now, to go home and enjoy Harry Connick Jr.’s “It Had To Be You”.

THE LAST WEEKEND

OMG! OMG! OMG! (Abbreviated for “Oh My God! [Goodness! Gosh!] Choice of last word depends on which era you are from and the mood you are in. I leave it to your imagination.) It is the last weekend of the month of January 2024. How cool can that be?

… “Sailing” by Rod Stewart is coming over the air from somewhere in the distant background.

Almost at the very last moment (note that a moment is a shorter time than a second [unverified definition]), we were invited to participate in having a booth at Amcorp Shopping Mall for this weekend. We, meaning, Jeannie and I; decided on taking it.

We had just finished playing a boardgame, “Pictureka” with Laura (our daughter) and Praga (Laura’s boyfriend), when we received a message asking if we would like to take up the slot that became available at the very last minute.

Me, trying to syke the splitting headache that I have been having since I woke up this morning. Syke : using the happiness theory to overcome the throbbing or is it splitting headache? I can’t really decide.

The result: We are here, at Amcorp Shopping Mall, now; on the first floor at Booth F1.16. New area, new spot, new friends from the booths on the both sides of us. We are already well into the 5th hour.

Almost as soon as we opened with an invisible “WELCOME SIGN”, that the Batik Influencer managed to sell one of her creations.

I, on the other hand, according to Jeannie, who is also my image consultant; had to work on my image as a writer, while welcoming and making new friends, and finding new owners for my HOTWHEELS collection.

At work. Me, piecing this article together in between times when the front is quiet. Notice that my watch band matches my shirt.

So, with the hat on, a more writer’s image of a writer, do you think? Perhaps, the long awaited book-writing project will move with gusto?

The writer, caught in the act!!! Writing? Typing? Inputting? (If there is such a word), while the “coast” is clear (some quiet time).

A satisfied buyer, one who was very, very polite.

Jane of “Jane’s Cottage Soaps”

Jane of “Jane’s Cottage Soaps” (her own business, naturally), is one of the long time businesses of Amcorp Shopping Mall. Her products are unique, many of which she custom makes to meet the needs of her customers. She is an ardent reader of physical books (The ones where you need to turn / flip the pages. Serious readers can’t get enough of these physical books). I caught her in the act of reading a book, based on a true story writen by Ann Rule. Looking forward to her buying my book when it’s published. Btw, Jane was the only person in the row of booths, without an electronic gadget in her hands.

OK. Signing out for now. I’m thinking : Should I get a mechanical keys keyboard to add more writer to the writer? I wonder…

Yes, we, i.e. Jeannie and I; are at it again. We are at Amcorp Mall, the happening place, where discerning customers come looking for specific things of interest to purchase and collect. This is our first outing at Amcorp Mall for 2024.

Already having fun. We are entertained by Tamil (2)  rock n roll songs, and now, Kenny G, playing “I’m Dreaming Of a White Christmas” – music coming over the speakers from a booth one floor below us, selling vinyl records.

We watched the film “Shadows In The Sun”, starring  Claire Forlani, Harvey Keitel and Joshua Jackson; 5 times on tv during the week. I thought this is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. The setting: a little village in Italy. Jeremy, an editor / publisher, was tasked with getting Weldon Parish, a writer, to come out of retirement and sign with his publishing firm that he was attached with. The movie was very captivating. Claire was absolutely stunning in her role as Isabella Parish.

Weldon, the writer; wore a hat or a cap (more the “Andy Capp” [3] cap) wherever all the time. So, Jeannie thought, that me being a writer, should wear one, too. What do you think? Should I start doning a hat to have a more distinct writer image?

Here, below; is a couple of pics of me trying on a couple of hats which we are selling. One took me back to the era of the tv series, “Colombo”. However, a close friend, Patrick Archibald; may claim that he has inspired me with a hat like this. I can see the smile on his face now. 😀

Some would mistake me as Inspector Colombo, of the famed TV series, “Colombo”. Admit it, this hat does look cool on me.

The other hat was a baseball cap, with the word “Girl” in pink on the front of it.

The atmosphere, in Amcorp Mall, at least in the area we were at; was wonderful with one Christmas carol after another by Kenny G; coming over the speakers, filling the air with Christmas calm and joy. After all, Christmas is everyday.

The Batik Influencer, Jeannie; with one of her latest creations.

“Silent Night” is on now.

Met with my dear friend, Khatijah Marianne Abdullah and her husband, Fadil; at their booth. Their booth is super, super colourful; with their many colourful handmade and painted works of art. We had a nice chat. Marianne said that she now bakes homemade brownies, too; and will bring some tomorrow. Looking forward to tasting them.

The Batik Influencer (4) is making her rounds to all the booths, visiting all our new friends that we have made over the multiple times that we had set up our booth here over the last nine months.

Throughout the day, I was sipping ice-cold, super kaw kaw (5) coffee we picked up from New Apollos restaurant before coming to Amcorp. Mall. Jeannie’s ice coffee was of normal strength, without the “kaw”. The coffee remained cold throughout because we kept it in our Hydroflasks.

We have made quite a few new friends today. One of them is Jean Dorcet, who runs a women’s clothing business. Another, an engineer; who collects expensive watches. He was wearing a nice Carter Santos with leather band.

A customer browsing through the Hotwheels selection, while Jeannie is explaining the beauty of batik to one of our new friends).

The “kopi peng kaw kaw” is in the red Hydroflask (naturally, “dangerous”😂😉).

As we draw to the end of the day at Amcorp Mall, Jeannie is making her final rounds to the shops around here.

We will be back tomorrow for more fun, laughter, thrills, and excitement. Come drop by for a chat. See you.

NOTES:
1. Amcorp Shopping Mall is located in Petaling Jaya, a city in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.

WORK, AMERICANO AND MAJOR CRUNCH COOKIE

New, yet not so new surroundings.

At Tedboy Bakery in Bangsar South for a tall, iced, Americano. Not bad. It is slightly better than “o.k.”

Got some work done on the Fold 3. Having used it for over a year, I would like to see huge improvements, more so in the area of its software, hopefully; in the upcoming Fold 5, which will be launched in about 2 months. And the camera. And the battery life. The battery life was not that great to begin with. But now, it seems to drain faster than it should.

However, to me; the Samsung Fold is still the best in the market for the work I do. When I have a bit of free time (what is that in today’s day and age?), I fiddle around with what this larger than a phablet, folding tablet, can do; especially with Android apps.

The nutty cookie was well packed…so well packed that it was quite difficult to open the plastic packing. The nutty cookie was quite nice.

When I got home, I realised that the cashier did not give me a bill. Probably they practice giving a bill only when it is requested for.

Over all, I like the setting and ambience of this cafe / bakery. It is worth checking out if you are in Bangsar South.

NOTE:
Bangsar South, a development on the former Kampung Kerinchi (Kerinchi Village) site, borders between Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.
Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya are cities in Malaysia.

BEING ME

This is my life…my story…my book. I am the author, the only author of my life.

I will no longer let anyone else write it and be co-author.

I will accept suggestions on how to improve my story.

I will not apologize for the edits I make. People may or may not like me, but it is important to me to stay true to who I am.

Picture Quotes

PICASSO AND HIS PAINTINGS, ARBUS AND HER PHOTOGRAPHY, ATKINSON AND HIS ESSAYS

In the crowded business of his life, the writer tells his story through the carvings, drawings, painting formation of words… of sentences… on a canvas of a blank page in his notebook, his ideaSketchpad💡, his blog or a Microsoft word file.

Pictures form words….words form pictures. It is his expression of what he sees. Most times, if he has to relate a story… an event… an incident, his eyes or ears or even his nose, will dictate the story to his brain which transforms into signals flowing to his hands that are typing on the keyboard or his hand that holds a writing instrument. Oft times, if a story has to be told as it is; no feelings are put into it, as they are not required.

When no feelings are included in his work, then, he is like any ordinary painter or a person with a camera, just taking pictures.

Visions by Picasso (Singulart)

When he immerses himself in his work; he becomes involved. His additional sense which cannot be seen nor touched yet is so powerful, takes him over and beyond himself.

His feelings transform him from just being a painter to being an artist where every stroke of the brush, the way it is used on the canvas, the pressure applied in each stroke – a person admiring the artist work can sense the artist’s mood, excitement, sadness. It is quite remarkable.

The Use of Black & White by Diane Arbus (ArtDependence)

Framing a picture with just the right amount of light, bouncing off the subject to express an impression of people in the shot or impress an expression that the photographer wants to get his audience to experience…that makes him different from being someone just taking pictures.

As the writer awakes from his short nap, a well deserved and needed rest, he ponders on the silence within. The right amount of pressure on the “stroke of his expression”, the “light that filters to the word” that causes it to resonate with his readers, his audience…brings to life all that he wants to share… the exact angle… the point of view… as he sees it!

No matter how very hard he tries to captivate his whole audience, that are all his readers; there will be some who have no depth of field in life. These are the “some”, those who don’t leave a wonder in the lives of people; yet, wonder what has happened to life.

GOODNESS

They were rare moments yesterday. No, they were more than some “moments”. It was a rare day yesterday when I did not do any writing or finger-hitting the keyboard, typing. Tiredness seemed to have gotten the better of me and I did not wrestle with it or try to decipher it with thoughts, theories or research. I was plain tired and slept quite a lot the whole day.

I can hear the whispers… “actually, he is lazy” and louder than whispers… “lepak lah, bro” and “relax bruder…more like “bruuuddderr”. (1)😂 But then, I still went for my 15 kilometer walk.

My wife, Jeannie; will say “Have a kit-kat”, a line from the Kit-kat brand chocolate wafer advertisement of a few years ago. This advert carried a message to take a break, at least for a while.

Just took a few moments off to turn my keyboard upside down and pat it to shake and remove any dust that might have accumulated in the grooves around the keys or receptacles. Is this considered a break?

Then, I went to the kitchen to make a cold chocolate drink instead of my usual coffee. Checked my Samsung Tab S7 to see if it still had juice. It was on 37%. So I had it plugged in to the fast charger brick. Or is this a break?

Is this procastinating? Yes and no. Yes, if there is a time that is given for an article to be completed. And I think there is more than sufficient time to complete the article. And no, if I need that moment’s break or an idea refresh or writer’s block (?) or just to get something else done.

I love what I am doing. Thoroughly! I should have started much earlier when my school headmaster, the late Brother Harold Reynolds (2) had a long talk with me just before I completed secondary school, suggesting I sign up in a school for journalism to capitalise and sharpen my English language skills further. I didn’t. I had other ideas of what I wanted to do back then, when I was 18.

Fast forward to today. I do not have any regrets of not having started earlier. I think if I started back then, I would have been compelled to just write for a newspaper or probably a publication as a journalist. Either way, I think I would have done well as they are great careers.

As they (who are the “they”? I keep asking this question often enough 😉) say, “Better late than never.

Now, I know the reason why I write. Why I want to write. I hope to impact the world with goodness; that people can find “goodness” in their everyday lives, even in the littlest of moments or things. An example of this is when Ms Victoria Boudeville of Seremban (3); messaged me about 3 weeks ago after reading one of my articles I wrote, and suggested for me to write about an amazing lady who dedicates her life to looking after stray dogs.

Victoria made another suggestion that I write about her football team in which her daughter is in. She travels 5 times a week to bring her daughter for training in Petaling Jaya. (4) Both are wonderful stories that I have put on my sketchboard or writing board. “Sketchboard” sounds fun.😀

There are many like Victoria, who have made suggestions or given me story ideas. At present, my sketchboard is lined up with a number of stories waiting to be written, that it seems like there is a backlog or long queue.

We have to be better than what we are today, not for ourselves; but to help make the world a better place. There is so much that I want to do, yet I have not achieved much. I initiated “BELIEVE” 3 years back and “THE RIPPLE EFFECT” last year. Deep down in my heart; I have always wanted to inspire the world with goodness. I want and hope to do more through http://www.leatherpotato.com.

Please share your views and thoughts with me on helping make this possible. You can also email me at alan@leatherpotato.com The picture “L A” is the logo for leatherpotato. A few eyebrows raised, “L.A. for Leatherpotato”? Leave that for another story.

NOTES

  1. “lepak lah, bro” and “relax bruder…more like “bruuuddderr” – slang terms used by Malaysians and Singaporeans. It means to spend one’s time aimlessly loitering or loafing around. lexico.com Interestingly, the word “lepak” is now found in the Oxford dictionary. Lepaked is past tense.
