Pushin’ and Slidin’

It’s my usual siesta time…whenever I get a chance. Which is rarely…which is usual. So how does it become my “usual” siesta time? Does more than once constitute it as “Usual?”

So, what am I (“was”, since I am reporting this hours after) doing at my usual siesta time? For one, Malaysia has public holidays aplenty. Great breaks for those who work really hard. Tough for those guys who look forward to going to work to get a break from all the holidays.

Anyway, in the wee hours of Sunday morning (after 10.00am); we (Jeannie my wife, and I) were looking for a joint we have not been to before for our coffee fix. Over the last two weeks; we were sipping coffee, having lunch and eating cake at cafes that were leafy green decorated – surrounded by plants and such (an article on this topic is on my ideaSketchpad).

Our plan was to chill, while our time away and do almost nothing. This is near impossible for either of us. I would whip out my Fold 3 and get on with writing something…anything…or working on any of the topics on my ideaSketchpad. Jeannie would be on her usual, “Business development market survey”.

I said, “We have two main choices: one was to look for a cafe we have not been to, which could be in a shoplot on its own, where we could sit and relax for a few hours…drinking coffee and eating cake or pastries.

The other choice was to have coffee in a cafe located in a shopping mall. We could drink coffee, eat cake and pastries. Then, walk around all the stores and shop…..then, to another cafe…drink more coffee, eat more cake and more pastries. Generally, we still do keep watch on our calorie and sugar intake. Which means, working off the extra calories on my daily 15 kilometer walks.

Of course, we all know the outcome of this. Though I love my coffee fix, I am not one who can sit for hours in one place, then get up and go home. This is so (so? Like, like so not “English” English?) not me. Ok ok. Throw the brickbats, coffee, mugs, kitchen sink, an S22 Ultra 18gb ram with 1 Terrorbite of storage, all your boxes of unopened chocolate (just had some milk chocolate from Germany. It was sssooooo ss-mmm-ooo-th and divine) at me. As for the chocolate, I like the ones with hazel or mixed nuts, better (hint, hint).

Oh yeah… the outcome was: we went to a shopping mall – Mid-Valley shopping mall. We drove to the carpark and parked our car; finding an empty space fairly easily without having to loop the carpark several times. Ours is not one of those self-drive, electric vehicles. From the looks of things, the upcoming new models may be able to “twit” as well.

When we got in the shopping area, it hit us like the “matrix”. There were like (like?) a kezillion people. It was crowded. It was like this on all the shopping floor levels. I did not see people carrying their portable printing presses to print cash if they ran short. I suppose now is the day of plastic. But that’s on its way out, too. It is pay by scan.

Jeannie and I headed to KFC for a quick bite as I had not had lunch yet. The meal was good. Then, we braved our way through the crowds again. This was not what we had envisioned for a nice Sunday afternoon… coffee, cake, pastries, relaxation, shopping, coffee, cake, pastries. When I say, “relaxation”; I’m with my fold 3, in my ideaSketchpad๐Ÿ’ก; “writing” / tapping / swiping / keying – working on my articles.

We spent about an hour window-shopping. Jeannie went to her favourite – “Zara” store. She spent a bit of time at Metrojaya, too. I popped in to the various IT shops – TMT, Logitech and Samsung. Samsung’s premium store does not promote many of their accessories like watchbands for the Watch 4 & 4Classic, cases for the Fold 3, etc. It would be good if they do as they will be able to reach out to a broader base of customers.

I went to Skechers, too. Skechers is Jeannie’s and my favourite brand of footwear. They are the most comfortable to wear, especially for long periods of time. We find their “air-cooled, Goga Mat” inner soles the most comfortable. The soft outer soles completes the comfort. I was looking for a casual, sort-of-formal pair – dark tan leather top, with a white or off-white outer sole. They did not have such a pair.

We left within an hour to an hour and a half after arriving at the mall because the crowds did not make it comfortable for us to shop. I had a couple of rough “bump-offs” by two oversized (and I mean oversized) people who may believe they are God’s gift to mankind, because they did not even apologise.

So, making our way back home was a capital idea. When we got home, I made a “Super” Rich 3-in-1 kopi ice. Very nice. Not too sweet, not too weak, either. This is my new “try-out”. After a cup of this coffee, I go back to my usual all-black coffee, strictly plain and rather “kau”, too.

There are helpful instructions on the back of the packet, for you to follow to make this coffee. That’s if you can read them. It’s in 0.0001pt font size.

The thing about being back home is I have all my creature comforts, big screen monitor, laptops, tablets and phones and I am back working.

NEW YEAR’S SPECIAL: 2022 HOPE – LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN

Dec 29th 2021. I just moved my Logitech K-380 key board 1 inch to the rightโ†’, again. A few minutes ago, I moved it a couple of inches to the left, slightly away from meโ†ธ. A few minutes before that, I moved it to the rightโ†’. Trying to fit it spot on ๐Ÿ† with the framework of my screen and the angle I am sitting in.

At the corner of my eye (literally) my left eye, that is; the yellow Christmas tree lights on the Christmas tree are blinking in varied intervals, creating patterns. Beyond that, pass the glass sliding door, the diamond shaped light-blue grill-gate, stretching further, pass the garden and drive-way, the front gate, across the road, pass the front gate of Aunty Vimala’s house and her drive-way; the yellow lights hanging from her porch ceiling are also blinking.

Dec 30th 2021. Just after lunch. Thought I would go out for my 15.6km walk now. But my Samsung Watch 4 Classic is, of all times; low on juice and needs to be charged. Hope to start my walk by 3.00pm. The sky is grey with rainclouds hanging around. Nice time for a walk. While looking out the glass sliding door; I had flashback memories of when I was 11 or 12 years old. It was like me looking at this scene and at the same time, though my eyes when I was at that age – another day-dreamer episode? It was a scene of me lying on the floor near the collapsible gate (this acted or was the grill for the front door), looking out at the bright, sunny sky; with the formation of various cloud shapes.

I was also playing with several diecast car models – they could have been Dinky, Corgi or Matchbox brands – I am not too clear, as they were Malcolm’s car collection, not mine. I followed after dad’s interest in building Revell and Airfix aeroplane model kits. I remember someone gave dad a container ship model which had a motor that came with it. Dad was working in the port in Port Klang, so this was a replica model given by a shipping company of one of its ships. I think the company was OOCL, I could be mistaken. After all, it was a long time ago. Anyway, I built (assembled) the ship.

3.09pm. My Samsung Watch 4 Classic is at 91% charge – more than enough to see me through the 15.6km distance. The weather seems to be holding up.

10.57pm. Did my 15.6km walk, showered, had dinner and rested for a bit. Jeannie is out for dinner with some of her close friends. So, that leaves me here with you, the reader.

After I hit my target of 100 articles; I just sort of took a step back from writing for a few days. A break. OKaaayyy… my Christmas holidays. Though I was not writing, I was not really doing nothing. I was kind of restless – as you can imagine from the paragraphs above where my mind wonders off.

I started off with the first few lines of my book. Seems sort of jibberish. Not too sure how to go about this book. I have thought of the title, though I don’t think it’s gonna stick. I know it has to be 130,000 words, so that accounts to something, I guess. I was thinking fiction, reality-to-fiction; or fiction-to-reality. Decisions, decisions.

I’ve been asked by many readers of my works, and people who have yet to read my essays but hold me to the 2021 new year’s resolutions I made at the end of 2020; whether I will continue to write articles since I will be focusing on my book. The answer is “Yes”, I will continue to write articles. People from over 30 countries are reading these articles. These articles are available for the rest of the world to access them.

I have received personal messages from people telling me how my stories have impacted their lives and brought them fond memories in one way or another in their own lives, too.

Many of my articles published; have pushed me to research and gather information. Chen Cuifen, and The Brick, to name a couple; are amongst those with some research done.

2022 is about to grace itself on us in less than seven hours. It is “that time“…. New Year’s Resolutions. Happy for many, there will be those with good intentions by making resolutions, others will jump on the bandwagon in making resolutions to be with the “with it” crowd; then there will be those who will do nothing.

I… I look forward to making resolutions as I find it difficult to live in a haphazard life, not knowing whether I am coming or going. I have many more things that I want to do and achieve before I retire at 105 (that now seems to be the earliest age set). OK, I will start first:

My 2022 New Year’s resolutions are:

  1. To write and publish a book of at least 130,000 words. My secondary goal is that it will become a bestseller for a movie.
  2. To continue with the goal I set out in 2020, i.e. to be completely debt free. The last two years has brought remarkable results.
  3. To bring down my weight to 70.5kg and be disciplined at maintaining it at that level, from the current 71.8kg – 75.3kg.

While the temptation by many will be to start working at these New Year’s resolutions on January 3rd since January 1st and 2nd is the weekend; I have already started by mapping out my plans. I cannot let 2 days slip by me. I find the challenge exhilarating!

I will also be introducing an idea and promoting it to a group of people. It looks like the idea is an uphill task but this project will promote safety and help prevent possible catastrophes.

I would like to wish everyone the world over, Happy New Year : “HOPE”. With it comes Peace and Joy!

IS THE WATCH 4 SAME, SAME BUT NOT THE SAME?

Fig.1: Right to Left: Watch 4 Classic Silver, Watch 4 Black and the Watch 4

Many of today’s watches are not the same as the ones of thirty years ago. Today’s watches are called “smartwatches”. These watches can do almost anything with the exception of maybe cook, do the laundry, exercise for you and recharge its batteries by itself. Hold that thought for a moment… recharge its batteries on the go, without us having to worry when it is going to run out on us. That technology, though in its infancy; is available. A variation of it is being made available by one of the “hip” Chinese tech brands.

There are many brands of watches, including premium watches like Tag Heuer and Fossil that have a range of dress smartwatches; and Fitbit and Garmin that are fitness smartwatches.

Two brands that are in the forefront of smartwatches, technology-wise, are Samsung and Apple. While Apple’s iWatch is in it’s 6th generation; one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the different generations.

Samsung on the other hand, has come out with different models, shapes, sizes, etc… well until recently with their launch of the Samsung Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. The Watch 4 is similar to the model its replacing, their Active2; and the Watch 4 Classic is near identical to the Watch 3 its replacing.

I have always been a Samsung watch-user person. My daily timepiece on my wrist is the Samsung Watch 3. My previous watch before the Watch 3 was the Frontier model, which is similar to the Watch 3. Both these watches look fairly identical, except that my Frontier was the silver color version. Initially, when Samsung announced the Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic release, I thought I was going to stick with my Watch 3 as it is almost identical to the new release.

My Watch 3 is running on Samsung’s Tizen Operating System (OS) whereas the Watch 4 is running on Android’s Wear OS. Blah! Blah! Blah! No one is going to say, “Oh really? Wow! You are so cool! Can we wefie a pic of me with you wearing this ever-so-awesome “Android Wear OS?” This info will interest tech-interested guys like me, but not to the extent of nerd mentality.

Samsung’s announcement that they would ditch their Tizen OS and not offer support for it in the future made me decide to get the Watch 4 Classic or Watch 4. So, which watch to get?

Looking at the specs sheet above, all specs are the same except that the 40mm and 44mm are aluminum cases and the 42mm and 44mm are steel cases with the physical rotating bezel. The Watch 4 has a touch screen bezel which is the black band bordering the face.

I was thinking of opting for the green 44mm Watch 4 – a different look from the Classic-type which I have had over the last two seasons (models). The aluminum case is so light that you won’t realize the watch is on your hand. But the black band… The black “halo” ring or band around the face is ok if the watch faces are black. In Fig. 3, the green Watch 4 sports a black face which makes the overall watch look nice. Other than black, the black band does not look too great.

The Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) was the other main reason that I decided to go for the Watch 4 Classic. All Watch 4 models has this function. I do like to keep track of my health, especially when I go for 15km daily brisk walks. I keep track of my pace time per kilometer, heart rate, number of steps, Oxygen level in blood. Now, the BIA is added on to give me an idea of my body mass composition, which changes daily.

Finally, I decided on the Classic 46mm Silver, a change from having the black Watch 3 and Frontier models. I don’t think it looks too big on my wrist. The strap lugs coming out of the body are rather straight instead of curving towards the shape of the wrist. I guess it is ok, though, as it does not seem to leave empty gaps between the watch and wrist.

I am not exactly thrilled with the cheapish, sort of flimsy, rubbery silicone straps/band. I can’t use the leather straps which I acquired for my Watch 3 because they won’t fit the Watch 4 Classic, for that matter; any of the Watch 4 models because some wise guy at Samsung’s design studios fancied a change in strap band pin width would be dandy. The Watch 4 comes with 20mm pin width as opposed to the 22mm pin width of the Watch 3 and Frontier.

After thought. Just in case some of you may be wondering, I am not paid by Samsung to write this article, though it would be nice ๐Ÿ˜ . Neither am I for one brand against the other. It is a matter of preference. In my opinion, The iWatch is limited in its screen creativity. The add-ons like straps, bracelets and case protectors – one is definitely spoilt for choice.

Brrr-ring, brrr-ring. A call notification is coming in on my Watch 4. Gotta go. Maxwell Smart is calling. I hope he’s got one of these “smart” (pun intended) watches. The last time he called, he was using his old, analog outdated shoe phone.
