IS THIS COFFEE SEASON?

The season is hot. The weather is hot. At least that’s what the folks at the weather department want us to believe. We begin to wonder.

The meteorological (met.) department (the ones that stick a finger in their mouths, pull it out of their mouths, then stick that finger in the air to find out the direction of the wind), say the weather is going to be scorching; the next moment all hell breaks loose with some of the fiercest electrical storms lashing over Subang Jaya.

On the other hand, when they say it is going to storm; bring out the camels, as the weather is going to be parched dry.

Just in jest with the met. people. It isn’t true when they say that the met. people have a dry sense of humour.

So, speaking of dry weather spells, it has been a period of very hot, humid weather temperatures over the past couple of months, though it has not been without rain. There are thunderstorms thrown in for good measure. All this takes place during most days. By nightfall, temperatures start to climb. Most Malaysians aren’t used to the very warm nightfalls.

All this talk of weather makes one thirsty. One of the best beverages to have whether it be morning, afternoon or early evening is coffee. It offers an experience if you are in the right place and setting (very important).

Although I drink coffee almost throughout the day on my own; I do visit the various cafes in Subang Jaya and P.J. mainly for a change of scenery, meet friends and new people and to try something new in the coffee world, wherever possible.

Over the last two days, something new in the coffee world, at least to me, was made possible by Joanne. Yesterday, I walked into the coffee shop and said to her, “Make me something that you like with coffee. I want a cold drink.” She said she would think of something.

This is coffee with whipped cream (I think). What I found most unusual was a big cube of ice to keep the drink cold. Looking at the picture below, it looked like coffee with coconut milk and gula melaka. It was not.

This is coffee with whipped cream (I think). What I found more unusual was a big cube of ice to keep the drink cold.

The coffee was at the bottom of the glass with the whipped cream on top, latte style. The big cube of ice kept the drink at a constant cool temperature throughout, while the drink, was still in the glass. The meant that I could take my time sipping at the drink, knowing that it’s temperature would be constant. I thought it a novel idea.

The next day, that is today, I got into the cafe just before the rain came pouring down hard. This time, I requested Joanne to create a warm coffee of her liking.

The drink took a tad bit longer to make because she was making the perfect coffee. When the coffee arrived, whoa! It did not just look stunning, it was stunning! It was espresso with cinnamon among other ingredients. I could get the aroma of the cinnamon from afar before the drink arrived. When I had my first sip, the coffee was superb.

The perfect coffee while I got some work done on the Fold. I had the Bose buds to keep me company with some of my favourite music. The noise cancellation on the Bose buds is fantastic. Now, this is an experience.

You can see the heavy rain pouring down outside. A great coffee helps set the mood to get some good work done.

A great combination: The perfect coffee to keep me company while I get some work done on the Fold. At the same time, listening to some of my favourite music on the Bose buds.

Like Joanne is to coffee (barista) with her lovely creations; there are many people in their own fields wanting to share their talents with all of us. Invite them. Have fun.

THE PERFECT PLACE?

The afternoon, family bonding. All busy, busy, busy…working. All doing their own thing.

Family bonding.

BintangMoolah or Starbucks, as it is more commonly known; was full house. With all the noise everyone was creating, it seemed the perfect place for work.

The ambience, the environment… Everyone seemed to be working. I wonder if Bintang Moolah can win an award for providing a conducive working space for those inspired to work… on a Sunday afternoon. How cool is that? For the price of purchasing these green and white logo-ed beverages, food and promotional products; you chup (or is it chop?) / book a table about 18 inches in diameter and a couple of chairs. Due to the scarcity of space at peak hours; you may find more than 3 people, hovering around these small tables.

The best part is… nobody complains. So, huddling around a small table, that barely has space for a laptop, a drink and a small plate of food; is totally cool.

I figure that there are favourite seats for possibly two groups of people.

One group of people want to be seen, so there is a need to sit at the front row – where traffic of people walking up and down, making their orders and then coming around again, this time to collect their readied orders when their names are called out…at times.

The second group of ardent Starbucks customers are those who basically want to remain incognito. If you look hard enough, you will find them clinging to corners with the least amount of light, or behind a potted plant…

My name is called most times – once, sometimes with a distinctively soft (many people say “small”) voice, “Alan, Allan, Ellan, Elan, Alen, Allen” …there is a permutation of spellings to my name. If you are not really paying attention, yet expect a booming or thunderous voice to shout your name, “Alan…calling Alan…calling one, twice…” ain’t gonna happen. Then, you wonder what’s taking your order so long. You walk up to the order taking / drink preparing guy, loosely referred to as a barista; only to find your drink is on the counter, waiting for you to collect it. I guess that is why there are times when you see people hanging around the counter, to pick up their orders as soon as the drinks are ready. On quieter days, these guys behind the counter, still don’t call out your name. Perhaps, I am behind time and need to catch up with the latest – follow almost everybody else: hang around the counter and pick up your order once it is ready.

Starbucks is a nice environment to get some work done. Perhaps, when you see people all around you with their faces almost glued to their laptop screens, or taking down notes, some with the tiniest of handwritings; you will feel inspired to put in some work, too.

Starbucks coffees and other beverages are typical Starbucks drinks as can be expected. They maintain standards they have set for themselves. And regulars come here, expecting exactly what they expect. That is a good thing, too.

As we, the family, pack up to leave for the evening; we are satisfied that we have accomplished some work while we were here, in a comfortable setting, right atmosphere and ambience. Looking forward to our next visit here.

Coffee, Square “Donuts” and the Latest Gadgets

At Starbucks with Leslie Quak

Our usual meeting grounds – Sunway Pyramid.

Leslie Quak and I were classmates in La Salle School, Klang (3), back in the 1970s. We lost contact after school. It was not until just over 10 years ago that we reconnected through Facebook. Facebook has been and still is a good social media platform to reconnect with old friends, and also make new friends.

Leslie runs a very successful Corporate Services firm. Whenever he has meetings in Subang Jaya (3) or Petaling Jaya (3) and has some free time after that, he messages me (“texts” me, for those who are ultra modern in description) to meet up.

Our meet ups usually take place in Sunway Pyramid shopping mall located in Subang Jaya. The reason is because of its location which is central to most of our activities. We usually meet for coffee or lunch before or after our walk visits to the IT part of the mall to see what’s new. Most times, we have coffee at Starbucks which is located in Sunway Lagoon Hotel. It is at the corner of the hotel just next to the mall. Usually not crowded, it offers the comfort of a relaxed atmosphere.

Leslie and I have several similar interests, the top of the list being gadgets. This would include smartphones, smartwatches and small or mini cameras. Our latest topic of conversation was about Samsung.

Each year with the introduction of the latest line ups in smartphones and smartwatches, we have seen the tapering off of new stuff these things can do. The newest launch was from Samsung, for instance. They just launched their Galaxy Z-Fold 5, Galaxy Z-flip 5 in the smartphone category; and the Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic, among other items which we both, aren’t really keen on.

You will be forgiven to mistake the Fold 5 for the Fold 4 or 3; the Watch 6 for the Watch 5 or Watch 4; and the Watch 6 Classic for the Watch 4 Classic or Watch 3. Whatever improvements these new models come out with, are slight incrementals.

The Fold 5 has cosmetic changes that most people won’t be able to tell the difference. New upgraded chip, slimmer body, folds flush with no gaps is not a gamechanger for most people. I will hold on to my Fold 3 for now.

In this newest line up, the Z-Flip 5 will garner the most interest with its much larger cover display. They are not the first to have this type of display. Motorola and Oppo launched their models slightly earlier in the year. Other than that, almost everything else remains the same.

It is quite interesting how the Z-Flip and other similar models are being targeted (marketed) to the Gen Z adults.

Users say the advantages of a flip phone’s vintage functionality compared to the technical wizardry of today’s smartphones include: helping them escape the always-on anxiety that comes from instant (and constant) communication; ungluing them from their screens so they can more fully engage with what’s going on around (1)

As people become more aware of the potential side effects of excessive screen time and constant digital connectivity, some are choosing to digitally detox. Flip phones are a way people can limit their exposure to digital noise and build a healthier relationship with technology (2)

Before the advent of the smartwatches, when one buys a watch, it is meant mainly to tell (ok it does not “tell”, it shows) the time. This watch will last a lifetime or several lifetimes. Now, the smartwatches encourages you to change or ‘upgrade” to the latest model which is usually every year.

We’ve just each eaten a Starbuck’s “signature fluffy donut” – plain square doughnut, sprinkled with sugar. Quite nice. A fairly big doughnut. Starbuck’s tag line for this donut is, “We don’t cut corners”. Not too heavy a pastry (sort off) with coffee. You should try it. Noticed how I spelt “doughnut”? Or is it “”donut”?

Now, to enjoy another cup of Caffe Americano – iced. Its in the beans and the way they are roasted. Leslie will have a Caffe Latte (pronounced as “Lah-teh”).
