THE CHEERFUL WAITER

It was mid-afternoon or evening. I think it really depends on each individual, how they would describe that time of the day. It may seem fanciful or even “up-market”. Or maybe…the sun began to feel its tiredness of the day, and go down; thus, turning the stage over to the night, moon and stars. I had just picked my wife from work, and the usual question, “What shall we have for dinner?”

Apa mau makan? (1) Hmmnnn… Let’s see….

We were in Subang Jaya. One would think we are spoilt for choice when it comes to food and restaurants. And we are.

However, after a long day at the office (anywhere can be your office), most people look forward to unwinding and relaxing. Choosing a place can be winding and un-relaxing.

Another criteria was that the restaurant had to be air-conditioned. The sun’s rays has been pelting down on us relentlessly and our humidity-o-meter has the pointer needle shooting way past maximum. (Some drama, I know. A bit of drama to accentuate the situation).

The easiest, fastest and more convenient place for food, and with air-conditioning to go for was McD’s.

Meal order: Burgers are small (living a more healthy lifestyle?), drinks – half cup filled with ice (the coke was so satisfyingly cold) to quench are overly thirsty throats and a side order of corn-in-a-cup.

We got to USJ 10, Taipan, within a few minutes. After circling around looking for a slot to park a car, we were successful. In our second round; we got a spot right in front of New Nanking which was closed for the day.

When we got into McD’s, Taipan USJ 10, Jeannie headed for the big order screen, the type that you have to profusely scroll up and down, and, left and right, to make our orders. I got ourselves a table near the McCafe (coffee area?) section.

While waiting for Jeannie, I watched this bubbly-spirited waiter greet each and every customer, thank them for coming by; even when most of the customers did not return his greetings or kindness. Here, I think the customers themselves, are not used to be treated with kindness, with respect, with pleasantness, so much so that they don’t expect to get it from anyone. And if they did get it, they won’t know how to respond.

Here I am with Hazeem, the cheerful and very pleasant McCafe Ambassador / waiter.

Today, Hazeem, added a bit of a spark in Jeannie’s and my life, and to all those other customers who had the opportunity of receiving his greetings, great customer service and kindness.

Jeannie, my wife, the Batik Influencer and I; just after our fairly light dinner at McD’s.

McD’s has a feather in its cap by having Hazeem as a member of their staff. We need more people like Hazeem to brighten the day of people who are usually carrying with them the day’s heavy-burden.

It was nice meeting you, Hazeem. See you again soon.

1. Apa mau makan? is Bahasa Malaysia for “What would you like to eat?”

FATHER, DAUGHTER AND THE ATIVA

I was about to leave the house and head north, first to P.J. to pick my wife, Jeannie; up from work; and then onwards to Kay El (1) (no, not from one of those Supermen movies) to pick our daughter, Laura; up from her work.

As I embarked on the usual long and arduous journey, I got a text message (“Whatsapp” for Malaysians and “Whats-up” for those that can see the word spelt as W-h-a-t-s-a-p-p but read it as “Whats-up”) from Jeannie saying that she was going for dinner with her colleague, Su Yin. Su Yin is a super wonderful person, a gem. She and I are now close friends for the simple reason that her birthday is 1 day before mine on July 9th. Mine is on July 10th.

So, since Jeannie was grabbing dinner on her own with Su Yin, I didn’t need to head to her office. The transport arrangement was that Su Yin would drop her back home after their dinner.

I headed straight to Laura’s office, reducing my travel time to and fro by about 10 minutes.

As we headed home, it was one of those (rare and becoming more rare) father and daughter alone quality times. As usual, I asked how her day was at the office. “Busy, but good”, she replied. Then she gave more details, especially how she and her colleagues are always encouraging each other, more so when they have project deadlines to meet. I was driving. Once in a while, I’d steal side glances to see that she was smiling and from the tone of her voice, she had a good day. And, she’d usually ask how my day was. And I’d tell her that it was good. Did most of the things that I wanted to do. Maybe could have done more… and at a faster pace.

It would have been more things on the to-do list, with the time saved. I wonder if it’s just me that I can’t see free time go to a waste without getting more work done.

Laura suggested that we’d go to Mackerdee’s for dinner. Laura ordered a Hot n Spicy chicken with French fries set. I went for a big Mac, coke and a chocolate sundae sort of ice-cream. She did all the touch screen scrolling up and down , looking for the best deals and hit the “confirm” (I think) button. It spat (more like rolled) out the receipt. We got a table by the window.

Our meal order: Laura’s meal was Hot n Spicy chicken with French fries. Mine was a big Mac, coke and a chocolate sundae sort of ice-cream.

The Big Mac, up close. Had to do a close-up shot as the “Big Mac” is shrinking in size, even as we speak…er…type. The Scottish might as well re-name it to “Biasa (2) Mac”.

This chocolate sundae is filled with zillions of calories.

Laura’s meal: Hot n spicy chicken with French fries.

The food was good. The Chocolate Sundae was an indulgence, a sweet one I might add.

The father – daughter moments, time together were priceless. When I think back to all the father -daughter times I had with Laura from the time she was a toddler right up to now – nothing has changed much. The aura of the bonding relationship – timeless. We soaked in the moments of just being together and enjoying that time. This is the time when the world around us slows down and we enjoy the present, the presence of each other.

You can see that I am controlling the shutter button of the Samsung Galaxy S-23 Ultra smartphone with the S-Pen.😁

An hour and a half later, we made our way home. If there is one thing that we should do more often, amongst the many other things, is to have more of “these times”. We found the magic in our moments.

My Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra was buzzing messages (more like hints) that it was now time to relax. Artificial Intelligence is what it is. I was not about to get into an argument with A.I.. Can we argue with A.I. or not? Shakespeare got his question wrong.
