MEMORABLE MOMENTS WITH LAURA

Arrival: 9.15am, Wednesday, June 27th, 2001.
Enjoying herself. With my Compaq 64GB, playing continuous music for her.

Where have the 23 years gone? I ponder on this question as I sit here, in the car, thumb typing this essay out on my Samsung Galaxy Fold 5, while in the mood of pondering or is it wondering? I will have to go with “pondering”.

I am sitting here in the car, waiting for Jeannie and Laura, while they shop for groceries at Aeon in Subang Jaya (1). We had just come from Mid-Valley Shopping Mall (2) after having lunch at Oriental restaurant and then doing a bit of shopping. Oriental was crowded, with a long queue as usual. While Jeannie and Laura waited in queue and made the orders at the same time; I made a bee line to Harvey Norman. It was quite a nice afternoon at Mid-Valley. As I wait for Jeannie and Laura; I tap, scribble, write and gesture-make commands on the Fold 5 with the S-Pen (besides the thumb-typing, coming up with this article; they, the two ladies; are getting groceries to stock up for the weekend.

I made a quick round to the usual favourite shops while we were at Mid-Valley, to check out special offer deals, if they had anything new. I stopped in at Planet Traveller, Crumpler, Samsung, Flash Gadget, Hat Attack, Teva, Harvey Norman, Timberland and the Nescafe booth where they sell the capsule coffee machines. It was more of a browse through. I was done in about an hour. So was Jeannie and Laura. I caught up with them at Bath & Body Work.

As we headed back to Subang Jaya, I suggested we stop by at Good Ground Bakery on our way in. (Story for another day). We had a nice, late afternoon slice of dark chocolate cake, a big pastry puff for eats. Laura had a chocolate drink while Jeannie and I both had a calamansi cooler each. The drinks were real thirst quenchers on such a hot Thursday afternoon.

These two pictures of Laura are at my work station.

Laura did the two pieces of art above ๐Ÿ‘† on my Samsung Note 2 (at that time in 2012), using the S-Pen. Notice her eye for details. Amazing! Laura was nearly 12 years old when she put the Note 2 through its paces.

Singapore

At Universal Studios, Singapore.๐Ÿ‘†

A couple of recent pictures ๐Ÿ‘†taken at Starbucks, Empire Gallery Shopping Centre..

This was taken at The Carpenter’s Daughter (TCD) on Mother’s Day. With us (Jeannie, Laura and I) are Praga, her fiancรฉ, (sitting on her right); and Christopher (my cousin), and his wife; Evalina.

Much of our get togetherness was always at the dining table, be it at breakfast, lunch, coffee / tea afternoon or dinner. These were the times when we all needed to do the same thing – eat / have our meals. And, many times when we were with family.

One for the album. A recent Atkinson family picture.

An evening recently, when Sarah Atkinson, was able to join us for coffee at Marks & Spencer, Sunway Pyramid.

“O.K. You caught me. I am still gonna eat.” This was a good candid shot.

When Laura was there to celebrate Jeannie’s and my MBA graduation. Not too long after that, some 20 years or so; Jeannie and I, were there for Laura when she graduated from university.

This was a time when Laura was embarking on a new adventure; when she was leaving for the U.S. for her tertiary education.
Graduated

27th June, 2024. Dinner. Laura, Praga (her fiancรฉ), me & Jeannie

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LAURA!
MAY GOD SHOWER HIS CHOICEST BLESSINGS IN ABUNDANCE ON YOU.
LOVE YOU MUCH MORE THAN FOREVER!

1. Subang Jaya is an urban city in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.
2. Situated in K. L.. Kuala Lumpur or K.L. as it is commonly known in these parts, is a bustling metropolitan city. It is the capital of Malaysia.

THE GREEN HAT

The bean vadai and the doughnut (“donut” when spelt the American way) vadai (1) was great as a quick brekkie.

It was about 8.30am in the morning. Didn’t know what it was like outdoors but figured the weather was sunny as the house looked brightly illuminated by the sun.

We, the Batik Influencer, Jeannie; and I were set to make our way down (or is it up?) to Amcorp Shopping Mall In P.J. (2) One of the reasons I was eager to get to Amcorp Mall was because I had made arrangements to meet with Mahmud, the hat seller. I met with him last evening and saw a couple of hats that I liked. He told me that he had an orange fedora hat, whether I would like to have a look at it first before I made a purchase. I love colours. An orange fedora? (1) – that would be something. I held my purchase back to today.

I tried the orange fedora on. It was a nice fit, with a wide brim. The bright orange was a clean and “happy” orange. It was nice. The only thing was the hat was rigid, firm. It was not as flexible as the two green hats or the hats that I already own. It would be mean more care in maintaining it. I can be quite rough at times, carrying as many things in both hands as possible so not having to make more trips. I need my hats to work for me. I like the soft hats where I can roll up, and tuck under my arm or in my bag.

My decision was now left to the two green fedora hats. Both hats were made of wool, which is natural for fedoras๐Ÿ˜‰. The olive-green model had a thicker brim, the brim was not as wide as the other one. It had a custom made dark brown, thin leather band with a black and white feather, and a tinge of an orange feather jutting out from it. It looked absolutely cool.

Exceptionally elegant. Mahmud personally custom made this hat with a dark brown leather band, and a black & white feather with an “orange lead end”.

It did not take me too long to decide, really. Naturally, I consulted with my two world renowned fashion consultants, Jeannie and our daughter, Laura. Both of them chose the olive-green over the jungle-green wider brim fedora. I, too; decided on the olive-green model.

In the meantime, the Batik Influencer, Jeannie; was promoting the colours of batik and all its designs in its glory with her “JEANNIE’S OWN” label Batik Cape Creations.

Got chance to be a famous, glamourous movie star?

The many profile angles of me modelling this fedora olive-green mid-size brim, with leather band trim and a black & white feather with an orange accent that made the difference.

The jungle green wide brim fedora, had its attractive pull, too. However, it did not quite thrill me as its competitor did. I loved this hat, too. But only one had to be chosen.

I wonder if my new fedora hat is going to lead me to Indiana Jones type of adventures. The keys on the computer keyboards are being tapped / hit on at a furious pace…We will just have to wait and see.

NOTES
1. Vada, vadai, wada, bara, or bora is a category of savoury fried snacks native to India. In Malaysia, it is more commonly known as vadai (pronounced with the “i” ending [sort of third syllable] and dragging as thought there is an additional “i” or more like “vadai-ii”.
The actual name of the bean or dhal vadai is “Masala vadai”. It is also known as Chana dhal vadai or parappu (dhal) vadai. It is made of chana dhal, spices, onions and herbs.
The “doughnut” type vadai is a South Indian savoury snack made from soaked or fermented pulses moulded into balls or a doughnut shape and then deep fried. The resulting snack is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.
2. Petaling Jaya or P.J. (as it is fondly referred to by many Malaysians and those staying around these parts.)
3. What Is a Fedora? (And How Is It Different From a Panama Hat?)The fedora looks precisely like the Panama hat when viewed at a passing glance. Both hats feature similarly proportioned crowns, bonds, brims, and tapers. The main difference between them is the material: a true fedora is almost always made of felt, usually wool. The fedora also has pinched sides and a lengthwise crease down the crown, creating its classic look. They can come in a variety of colors, with the band around the base often matching the color of the felt. Since they’re made from sheep’s wool, fedoras are a very eco-friendly fashion accessory to own.

Panama hats are made of straw.

BEACH, WATER, SAND, SUN, HATS

Once we settled our things in our room at the hotel; we went to do what we came here to do in the first place: go to the beach. Walk in the sands and the water, as the ocean gushed in, bringing with it heaps of soft sand.

Jeannie wasted no time in gathering treasures from the beach, rocks of all forms, shapes and sizes. Wherever she goes, she must pick up bits and pieces of nature. She picked up large maple and other leaves, acorns on our trips to the U.S., Europe and Australia; shells of all shapes, sizes and colours from previous beach holidays. Today, it is rocks. She has a keen eye for the beauty of things that escape my attention.

Here, the Batik Influencer is sporting a straw hat, something that she may incorporate in her fashion ideas perhaps?

A little ball of green weed that fought to keep itself on the beach. With it each incoming wave of water from the ocean; it was getting to look more difficult. However, it fought gallantly even though the odds were stacked heavily against it.

All smiles, definitely.

Corus hotel is many years old, and it shows it. Our room is very comfortable, with two king size beds, good view of the ocean and full room amenities. There’s a swimming pool and and a games room for indoor games.

A new edition to her collection.

All these things that she picks up and wants to bring home with us. I say “No bringing any of this stuff back”. Somehow or another, I will find her new found treasures or collection in our house.

Another nice pic. The setting sun bursting through the clouds, bouncing off onto the waters, creating flickering sparkles as the waves move.
The water feels good…sooo good.

The sky as my background: Perfect.
The magic lamp?

A postcard style picture of our hotel (yellow in colour). The hotel is many years old, and it shows it. Our room is very comfortable, with two king size beds, good view of the ocean and full room amenities. There’s a swimming pool and and a games room for indoor games.

A scene from one of those panama movies.

She’s happy. She’s got a bounty full of “treasures”.

Nice picture.
On our way back to the hotel as the sun went down.

Back in our room. The view from the window was lovely.

Stitching(?) / S-Penning an essay together. Could be described in the normal normal way, but…

A nice corned beef sandwich prepared by the Batik Influencer. She is an expert in food and is also a great chef in her own rights..
Relak la brudder ( local slang) for take a break and chill.

One of the treasures Jeannie found on the beach. She immediately came up with the idea of this natural and beautiful pen-holder.

A good first day of our holiday in Port Dickson.

Jeannie, in top form, feeling the ocean at her feet and the sifting sands, sort of crumble away as the waters rush back to the ocean.

THAT’S A GOOD THING

A fun weekend it was. We were at our F1.16 booth, setting up all the things we were putting up on sale. There were lots of new things we brought this weekend. Some of those new things included hats and angpow packets.โ€‚For our readers who are connecting from over 80 countries; the ang pow packets are in connection and celebration of the lunar new year or “Chinese New Year”, as it is known in Malaysia and it’s neighbouring countries.

Once our booth was ready to rock ‘n roll; I headed over to Mahmud, the hat-seller’s booth. The traditional red & black tartan cap was there, waiting for me to choose it for my own.

The Hatted Writer with my friend, Mahmud; the man with many hats – the hat seller, if you may.

Mahmud confirmed that this cap suits me. What do you, readers; think? I love it. I bought it. It is just the right size, very comfortable to wear and creates an understatement about the Hatted Writer.

A nice pic of the Hat Seller and the Hatted Writer.

The Batik Influencer in the meantime, was busy explaining to everyone that stopped by, about her Batik Cape creations: unique, for formal and informal use, and when not in use; fold it into a small bundle which can be slipped into a handbag or small bag for ease of carrying and taking with you wherever you go.

When Derek Fernandez found out through an article I published that morning that we were in Amcorp Shopping Mall that day (Sunday) and that the Batik Influencer was there with a limited number of batik capes available; he asked me to send pictures of what was available, chose one and said he would come over to get it in a while.

He was not kidding. The next thing we knew, he showed up to pick his chosen Batik Cape. We chatted for a while. Very interesting guy. A lawyer by profession, he has served on many committees, all with the aim of improving and “jaga-ing” (1)the beauty of Petaling Jaya (P.J.) for residents and people who are in P.J. frequently; from especially what development of concreting almost everything in sight calls “modern times”.

Look who dropped in. Kirk Raymond; St Thomas More’s Sound and Technical Specialist. With the author.

Surprises of surprises, I saw Kirk Raymond, St Thomas More’s sound and technical specialist, passing by and called out to him. He was just as surprised to see Jeannie and I manning a booth. We had a nice chat. He had to do a drama shot of us (picture aboveโ†‘).๐Ÿ˜

Farid, our new friend, just bought this hat from us. He looks a typical journalist.

We had a couple of hats of our own up for sale. This guy, by the name of Farid, sporting a grey worker’s cap, tried on the Fedora hat. I took a picture with him wearing it. I told him that he looked good in it. He bought it.

A Japanese interested customer, with the Batik Influencer.

The Batik Influencer, Jeannie; and the Hatted Writer, the author, me, Alan; having a “wefie” moment. It was more like several minutes ๐Ÿ˜ because we had to re-take this picture several times to get it right. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜

The limited number of Batik Capes the Batik Influencer had with her today, were sold out. She will be working on new designs and have them ready soon, for the many, many enquirers. Many of the Hotwheels and ang pow packets were sold. We found it really fun to meet so many people – friends as well as new friends. We got to talk about fun subjects: family, living and what they do to chill and relax. We have learnt so much from them. The biggest take away on weekends like these, that we, Jeannie and I; get, is that people are relaxed and away from the everyday hustle and bustle they get during the week. That’s a good thing.

We packed up by 5pm as we had a birthday dinner celebration to attend in Subang Jaya. We were hosting a dinner for Jeannie’s dad, my father-in-law; who was turning 85 years old. Yes, of course I would be wearing my tartan flat cap.

NOTES:
1. “Jaga-ing” (If there is ever such a word), is a Malay word, the “ing” part is the English side; meaning protecting.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚

It Had To Be You

“To love somebody…to love somebody the way I love you…” coming over the “airwaves(?)” Bee Gees… and I am taken back to 1971, 1972, when the movie “S.W.A.L.K” was showing.

It was also the time when Susan B**l was the “Wow! The gorgeous Girl” that every guy could only watch from afar. She was 21, we 13. Her boyfriend drove her around in his brand new Ford Cortina 2000 GXL, we…many of us did not even own a bicycle. I saw her a few years ago…she was still a stunner. Oh…and she married her boyfriend of 1971, 1972.

Mid-way through the second day at Amcorp Shopping Mall. The crowds are in, full-swing, browsing, window-shopping (no windows here. We are an open booth๐Ÿ˜‚), shopping.

By the time I got to typing, thinking, tinkering, screen-tapping (was about to use “thumping”. Leave it to your imagination), Bee Gees was over. Either I was a tad slow in typing, Bee Gees was taken off the air, or the song finished. I will go with the last option.

Looks good!

Jeannie has sold her latest creation to a very, very happy customer. She said she will be proudly wearing it during the coming soon Chinese New Year (lunar new year).

And I; I met with a journalist from a leading Malaysian newspaper. I decided to add more pizzaz to the fun I have in writing. I went for the new look.

The writer sporting the “serious Writer Image”.

Towards the end of last evening, at the closing stages of sales for the day; I remembered that there was a booth selling hats. I went looking for it and found it. The booth was on the west side (our booth is in the east wing), 1 floor above us. I saw a couple of hats I liked, one much more than the other. However, I did not want to hold back the hat seller from packing up for the day.

This is Mahmud, the specs and hats seller; with the writer wearing his newly acquired Panama hat.

Today, while I was eager to don a new look with the purchase of the new hat that I had yet to buy; we had a good number of people visiting our booth. Some were friends that we made in our previous outings here. I met an old La Salle Klang, schoolmate, Charles Thomas; too. He introduced me to his younger brother and a friend of his; both from La Salle Klang, too.

By the time I got going to get the hat I wanted, it was way into mid-afternoon. I met Mahmud, the specs & hat seller. He has an excellent selection of hats.

The hat, known as the “Panama hat” was still there. I tried it on again and confirmed it had to be you (the hat). The one I liked. I was sold.

If you are looking for a hat for any occasion, Mahmud’s the guy to see. He runs a booth on the 2nd Floor, East Wing.

My watch band matches my hat.

The Batik Influencer and the writer.

That famous Latino guy that plays the electric guitar looks like me, minus the moustache. Here I, the writer; am with my wife, Jeannie; the Batik Influencer.

While the hat itself has no. Magical powers, it sets the tone for new fun and conversations. For one, as I started wearing this hat, I noticed there were many others who wore hats, too. I mean, besides the common sight of those sporting baseball caps, there were many others who wore hats of all shapes and sizes.

Before we knew it, it was time for us to pack up and head for home. Not everything had gone the way we would have liked it to. I believe that the biggest takeaway Jeannie and I had this weekend was that we made more new friends.

Now, to go home and enjoy Harry Connick Jr.’s “It Had To Be You”.
