AT THE ATKINSONS ON BOXING DAY – THE DAY AFTER

Just received a container (bottle?) of pineapple jam tarts and another container of cheese fingers – both absolutely homemade – for sure. These are no ordinary pineapple jam tarts. These are top-of-the-line, best-est pineapple jam tarts around town (here I mean Subang Jaya, Pee Jay (also known as Petaling Jaya or P.J.) (1) and Kay El (Kuala Lumpur or K.L.) (2). The cheese fingers are great, too.

It all started when I got a text message from my cousin, Rachel Jacques, “Merry Christmas Alan and Jeannie. I want to send you some pineapple jam tarts. Was thinking of you when I was making them”. My reaction was “Wow!”.

Thinking of me when she was making them. What a way to start Christmas morning, receiving this wonderful message.

Jeannie and I took a short drive to Mid-Valley Shopping Mall (3) for brunch and to pick up a couple of things. “Short drive” means the distance is the same as always but the drive was a breeze with hardly any traffic on the Federal Highway.

We were in Klang (4) a couple of hours or so later, to celebrate and bask in the joy of Christmas with the Atkinson family, a tradition of sorts for as long as I can remember.

Must do, have to do or want to do. We want to do. For us, the family gathering together on this joyous occasion is one of the best gifts we can give and get from one another.

Being in the presence of one another, sending family waves to each other, says it all. In this day and age, it is becoming more challenging for us to meet one another. Almost everybody face- screens each other. Terror one, two and three. Don’t play play. (Actually can). (5)

Jeannie and I were the earliest to arrive at dad’s and mum’s house, so we were able to have some 2-on-2 (Jeannie & I, and Mum & Dad 😁) time with mum and dad. I was about to say, “We gotta spend time with Mum & Dad” – the American way. However, “gotta” in this context means we have to make the extra effort.

They were watching a musical show on tv. Mum was in her element, singing along with many of the carols. She sang soprano and could hold her notes and timing pretty well. Dad was as usual, in choir conducting mode – “conducting the choir”.

Royal Salute. The King at 93 and the Queen at 88, of the Atkinson and Gomes families, literally.

The rest of the family, including my neice, Ashley (Terence’s & Mabel’s daughter), who was on holiday from Europe; arrived shortly after.

Jeannie got a chicken sort of dish prepared though the high tea was catered. Uma made a wicked (awesomely awesome) Shepherd’s pie, Mexican style, complete with cachos.

THE ATKINSON FAMILY

The food was great the evening was great, most of all – the whole family coming together was great.

Jeannie and I headed to the Archibalds for dinner. We arrived a few minutes ahead of 7.30pm. Most of their guests were already there, meaning the phrase “typical Malaysia time” was waning. Punctuality here meant being earlier than the stipulated time.😁

Hazel, Patrick, their daughter, Mary; yours truly and Jeannie.

Patrick’s and Hazel’s guest list was a bit unusual, a first; at least to me. There were about 20 guests.

The “main star” of each family that was  there, was a person that was a godchild of theirs. Jeannie and I were a bit modified. Patrick and Hazel were witnesses to our daughter, Laura’s marriage. Can I say this was a “themed” dinner?

I found out that some of them were from Klang in their schooling days – all of whom were great fans of mum’s (my mother, better known as Mrs. Atkinson) butter cake. They grew up with mum’s butter cakes at birthdays and other celebrations.

The mix & match (if there was such a thing for food at dinner) of dishes (not just empty dishes but with food on them😉😀) at dinner was pretty good. If I had to choose one that was my very favourite for the evening; it would have had to be the cutlets.

Christmas Day came and went. Like that lah! (Malaysian expression).

At the Atkinsons on Boxing Day

“Boxing Day”, the day after Christmas; was one of the most important dates in the Christmas season in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Besides boxing each other (which we were made to believe, yet had no idea why. No google and ChatGBT back then.), it was “Open House” at the Atkinsons of Klang.

The morning usually began early (it should… after all it is the “morning”), with family members from the Atkinsons and Gomes clans – uncles, aunties, cousins and lots more being the first to visit. Our neighbours and friends made up the rest. The boys of La Salle Klang and the girls from HIJ Convent Klang made up the next big number of visitors. We also had many visitors from other states in Malaysia, as well as visitors from abroad that added blessings to our family.

Open House at Jalan Ladang (where we used to stay), quite often lasted non-stop for 2 to 3 days. Food flowed. Drinks flowed. Throughout the time – always. Music played 24 hours, non-stop, almost. The time when the music stopped was because it had reached the end of a vinyl record, or open-reel tap-deck, or cassette tapes. Turn it over to the flip side, and continue with the music.

The house was a big house with a lot of land, including a badminton court. It was amazing how we accommodated so many people with so many people over the two to three day hive of activity. But we did. The La Salle guys from my late brother Nigel’s, Terence’s, Malcolm’s and my batch; my late sister, Jennifer’s classmates and schoolmates of HIJ Convent, our cousins – they all reminisce about the great times they always had with us during our Christmas Open House and other times, too. We lived near La Salle School, which meant our home was a natural stopover for the boys. We always had fun – kaw kaw (6) maximum.

Fast forward to today – we may have never appreciated the time we had as much as we appreciate them now. I wonder if appreciation is quantifiable – if we add the energy of our appreciation now to the time we were living in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Today’s world is commandeered by the screen in front of us, be it the smartphone, tablet, computer big-screen. With the introduction of A.I. and ChatGBT, many people have willingly surrendered their rights to think and make decisions – to technology. Make no mistake – at the apex of technology is still helmed by human. Can you imagine another “the Martians Are Coming” (7).

While technology and all the gizmos that come with it are exciting and mostly helpful when used appropriately, they are tools to help our everyday life, instead of our everyday life becoming enslaved to these devices. I love tech and all it has to offer, but I won’t trade human-ness for them.

Let the spirit of being with people continue to be the magic of Christmas.

1. Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya are cities in Selangor, the west central state of Peninsular Malaysia, Malaysia.
2. Kuala Lumpur, the capital, is a bustling, ultra modern, cosmopolitan city of Malaysia.

6. Kaw kaw means strong or concentrated. Kaw is usually associated with coffee. Kaw Kaw would mean absolutely maximum. He got a reprimanding kaw kaw for the multiple errors he made in his work assignment.
7. “The Martians Are Coming” usually refers to the panic caused by Orson Wells” 1938 radio adaption of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, presented as fake news bulletins, but it’s also a popular phrase in sci-fi.

The Queen of the Atkinson and Gomes families. Looking as lovely as ever.

Our (Jeannie’s and my) son-in-law, Praga.

Uma, Malcolm’s wife, always a great cook. She made a sort of a slightly spicy, shepherd’s pie (she got the recipe when they stopped by at the Manger to pay homage to baby Jesus) with chachos (if I spelt it right), I think.

The youngest of my siblings, Malcolm. Also, the calmest.

Ashley – She’s back from a far away land, for the Christmas holidays.

You would probably mistake him for the lead singer from the world famous “Sha-na-na” singing group. Jay has earned and established bragging rights of his own – famous as an established singer and musician. Husband of Ashley, he speaks fluent French, just saying.

The Atkinson family, pickled or tickled about something.

CHRISTMAS IS LOVE

Christmas has been kind of different this year. For starters, we, (my wife, Jeannie) and I; have been going to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for daily mass almost every day over the last several months. Monsignor (1) Patrick Boudeville walked us through the Old and New Testaments, explaining how it was like with the people living during those eras, and how we can relate our lives to them.

I attended mass at the close of the Advent season. It was simple, yet meaningful, in preparation for the Christmas masses.

During the period, Jeannie and I visited the major shopping malls in town to see the Christmas decorations. Many of them were very beautiful, spectacular. The individual stores, big and small; decked their stores with Christmas trees, lights and decorations that were themed with what the stores were offering for Christmas. There were multiples of Christmas carols and songs that were played and aired – sung by famous singers and new ones, too. We have noted them down and will try to get the songs to add to our personal playlists.

Eating – did I mention eating earlier on? The cakes and cookies on sale – they all looked so delicious. By just looking at them, we’ve put on some extra kilos. In our case, we didn’t just look, we had to eat… in moderation, of course.😂

Then, when we go home, away from the hustle and bustle of things, life becomes quiet. We kind of settle back into our daily routines. Maybe, the shopping malls and stuff like that are temporary – entertainment at best. There is more to Christmas than all this.

While all this is part of Christmas, a major part (it depends on how you look at it), that is; the real meaning of Christmas is about LOVE. Love with family and friends. Back in my growing up years in the 1960s and 1970s; after receiving our Christmas presents (which was usually after attending midnight mass in church), my siblings and I were more excited visiting our cousins (yes, Christmas started at midnight – visits were after our present opening ceremony). Visits carried on for the next few days. We had Open House at our house on December 26th (every December 26th, it was at the Atkinsons’ house) – with everybody converging at our place for the next few days. It was really fun. A fun and meaningful event that is missing today.

A child that was born over 2,000 years ago, came with a promise, a gift if you may; of a love like no other, for all mankind.

JEANNIE AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THIS LOVE, JOY AND PEACE OF CHRISTMAS WITH ALL OUR FAMILY, OUR FRIENDS AND THE PEOPLE THAT COME INTO OUR EVERYDAY LIVES, THOSE THAT WE MAY MEET OR SEE ONLY ONCE, BUT PLAYED A PART TO MAKE OUR DAY WHOLE.

MERRY CHRISTMAS – LOVE PEACE & JOY

This has to be one of the cutest pictures, don’t you think so?

Jeannie, feeling very much at home; what with the flowers all around.

I’m right at home, with J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter team, promoting my book,
SPARKS OF JOY – SEIZE THE MOMENT. It’s a best seller!

The chair was quite comfy.

Christmas lights all around.

This is Christmas decorations – Japanese style (I think).

NOTES:
1. In the Catholic Church, Monsignor (from Italian monsignore, meaning “my Lord”) is an honorary title, not a rank, given by the Pope to certain priests for distinguished service, making them part of the “papal family” and granting them special dress/privileges. It’s a title of honor, recognizing exceptional dedication, often for those serving in diocesan leadership or the Vatican.

CHRISTMAS IS A-COMIN’

Yes, in a matter of days. There are hardly any more days before Christmas to add “s” in day (plural).

We, that is, my wife, Jeannie (also known as the Batik Influencer); and I, have been making our rounds to many of the major shopping malls, together with my cousin, Christopher and his wife, Evalina; and our close friend, Jolly. We wanted to bask in the Christmas-y feelings with all the Christmas decorations and music and presents and loads more of presents (just looking). And oh yeah…the crowds of people. You would think everyone from Malaysia, especially Malacca; came to Kay El (also known as K.L. or Kuala Lumpur [1]) and Pee Jay (P. J. also known as Petaling Jaya [2]), to do the same.

It was also time for a haircut and to colour. I told Sam when she last did my hair, that I would come to see her around this time for a colour.

I told her that I wanted something different from what I’ve had before. I suggested blue. Then, she went into her lecture mode: “You want, can but this and this and this and that and that and that. And you don’t have the time nor the patience to spend time looking after your hair perfectly”.

Sam and I have been very close friends for many years. She first did my daughter, Laura’s hair when Laura was 7 years old. So, she could lecture me with my best interests at heart.

When she put the colour on, I thought it was going to be the colour as in pictures #1 to #3. I thought it was pretty cool. I like.

After over one and half hours and two colours added on, the final result were as per pictures #4 to #6. Yes, two colours. Sam added in a bit of ash colour to give depth to the overall result. I like. I am happy with the final result. Even my neighbours think so. As I was walking my 10km walk this evening, a couple of teenagers remarked, “Uncle you had a haircut. You look good. Nice hair colour.” Compliments to Sam.

As most of us are busy with the hustle and bustle of doing things, let us not forget to have fun. The fun is being in the present (is there a pun here?) with the people we love…or like…or are in our midst😉.

Now… what shall I write for Christmas🎄…O the stress… hahaha😁

Picture #1. When I first took this picture while the colour was setting in, I thought it was pretty bold. Looks interesting. Looks good.

Picture #2. Yes, the colour looks good and way you look at it.

Picture #3: Is this my better side?

Picture #4. The end result.

Picture #5: Soft and gentle colours, with a tinge of the ash colour.

Picture #6: The writer look.

Sam, “O.k. let’s see…”

Sam, in her lecture element mood.

“Wait, wait. You will see. I do something that suits you and you like.”

As for the Christmas presents, we got some for our loved ones. And…why of course, ourselves, too. Ain’t telling what they are until Christmas. As for mine, hint…it is something to do with ting ting ting and rhymes with joy.

TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY WITH THE BOOK WRITER AND THE BATIK INFLUENCER

🎵It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas🎄, everywhere we go🎶… and you know how the rest of the song goes. Join in the festivities.

Jeannie (The Batik Influencer) and I (also known by many as the Hatted Writer), together with my cousin and friends; have been on a tour of sorts, or pilgrimage if you may; of some of the major shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur (1) or Kay El (K.L.) and Petaling Jaya or Pee Jay; checking our the level of christmassness each of them had to offer. It was more of the company and building the drama towards the big day and then, being filled with the reason of Christmas.

Though we have not planned, nor it is our intention to cover each and every of the many (there are multiple x many in Subang Jaya, Kay El and Pee Jay) shopping centres or malls, I dare say we have visited quite a few over the last few days.

Our first “official Christmas visit” was Sunway Pyramid, obviously due to it being amongst the closest of all the malls to our house.

Our next was to Bangsar New Village, then Bangsar Shopping Centre, TRX, Pavillion, KLCC and Nu Sentral.

At KLCC, I decided to visit one of Malaysia’s most well known and premier bookstores – Kinokuniya. My book, SPARKS OF JOY – SEIZE THE MOMENT is available at their store. You can get your copy of the book at Kinokuniya.

Or, you can get it directly from me, whichever best suits your convenience.

I will be at Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya or Pee Jay P.J.), together with the Batik Influencer, my wife, Jeannie; tomorrow (Saturday – December 13th) and Sunday, December 14th. I will be very happy to specially personalise your copy of the book. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

The Batik Influencer has a whole new range of her JEANNIE’S OWN Batik Cape Creation with her this weekend. They are, very, very limited number of pieces. Come on over as early as possible to get one, two or more of JEANNIE’S OWN Batik Cape Creations.

Christmas is just a wee number of days away. So, if you want to bring your guitars, violins, keyboards, trumpets, tubas, triangles to play and sing Christmas carols, the Batik Influencer and I will definitely join in the fun. Tis the season to be jolly, fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la🎵🎶

It is also getting to be the time when we have to prepare our goals, directions, dreams and aspirations, if we have not done so already (for some of us). I, for one; am grateful for each moment that has not presented itself yet, for the “now” moment and for the one that has just left. I had a traumatic (can I say that?) experienced which began about 48 hours ago and lasted for about a day, until the clearance that all was ok was confirmed. This experience is for another essay, maybe soon.

Now, let the weekend began. Oh, it has already.

‘TWAS THE EVE OF CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the eve of Christmas…it still is for another couple of hours to go.

Just had some Voodoo Magic to compliment our dinner. The Batik Influencer, Jeannie, who is also my wife; and I, decided to eat at home (for a change). Jeannie went for Maggi’s noodles. I had a burger.

Jeannie rustled up her Maggi noodles into a soupy meal. Looked good though I am not one for instant noodles. Jeannie also threw in some cut cherry toma“y”toes (American pronunciation, I think; not the British way of pronouncing it toma“h”toes), Japanese cucumbers and other “vege” (very Malaysian way of saying vegetables. I would prefer saying vegetables). That’s what made her meal look awesome. Bet tasted as good as it looked, or even more.

I had a premium burger, well done, that had baked beans and kernel corn to accompany it. A very” Mat Salleh” meal. That’s when I decided to liven the meal up. The answer “Voodoo Magic” – an extremely potent and rare commodity. “Smokin’ hot”, able to blow the roof off the top of your head, heart pumpin’, perspiration falling like Niagara Falls; this is one of the hottest chili sauce in town. Very, very, very limited stock available.

Voodoo Magic is a homemade chili sauce by Alan Martin. He says he uses only fresh ingredients, no preservatives, artificial colouring and other stuff like that. This is something like the chili sauce that is served with Chinese chicken rice; only a whole new level of niceness. The distinct tangerine in the sauce is superb.

Voodoo Magic takes hotness or spiciness to a whole new level. According to Alan Martin, stock is extremely limited. So, for now; it’s just his close circle of friends that can ger their hands on a bottle or two.

‘Twas / is the eve of Christmas (fast drawing to an end), I am at my workstation putting an essay together.

My workstation (one of my workstations, which could be anywhere😀) is quite cluttered with stuff.

One of our Christmas trees, decorated with Christmas ornaments on and around it.

Yes, Christmas eve. The day threw quite a few curve balls. One of them was that my book has hit a slight delay in being published.

I am trying to have it out by early January, if possible. Keep a lookout for it. Do let me know if you want to be amongst the first to acquire this book. It should start your 2025 on a positive note with happy vibes.

Taking a short photoshoot break.

On the other side of my workstation, with the “BLESSED ARE THE WEIRD PEOPLE”…the Writers” metal poster.

With Christmas decorations all around us, and beautiful Christmas carols and songs coming in throughout the day, the will be by far, the best Christmas. Looking forward to church atmosphere all around, too.

For now, Jeannie has bought me 5 full bars of Cadbury chocolate with hazelnuts, and 2 packets of M&M’s – you know, the ones in the yellow packs, the colour ball-shaped chocolates with peanuts in them (one of my favourites, too). I have to ensure I finish them. Then, walk 15,000 steps or nearly 11km at an even more vigorous pace, to burn off the excess sugar, For chocolates, I think it’s worth the extra exercise.

Will see you in my next article real soon. Til then…peace.✌🏻

Voodoo Magic chili sauce.

Blessed are the weird people like the Writers…

CHILLING AT MID-VALLEY

Still in the celebrative mood of Chinese New Year… Jeannie wanted to go to one of the shopping malls to do a bit of shopping. She suggested Mid-Valley Shopping Mall.

Traffic was good all the way to the mall. It probably is a good time to sight-see K.L. (1) Getting a parking bay at our usual parking area (Yes, I do a usual area where I park my car, can easily find it, and then; quite quickly exit when we leave) was easier than normal.

Not even 10 minutes in the mall when I realise that I, the Hatted Writer; was without my hat. I thought that I had left it in the car. I went back to the car to get it only to find that it was not there. Which meant that I had left it at home.

When I was searching on line sometime back for hat boxes, I saws that Mid-Valley had a hat store called “Hat Attack”. I decided to visit it. Who knows? I may be able to find something I like. Just in case some of you may be thinking that I left my hat/s at home on purpose so that I would have an excuse to get another hat…no, I didn’t.

I whipped (slowly. It kinda of contradicts the action “whipped” which depicts super fast😉 for the store location😂) up my phone from, searched for the location and got to the store within minutes. I’ve passed by this store multiple (A descriptive word I learnt from Laura instead of using “countless number of”. Sounds better) times without stepping into it. It was the time before I got in to hats, something which Jeannie kept egging me to start using, especially after watching the movie, “Shadows In The Sun” where Weldon Parrish (Harvey Keitel), the eccentric writer, always wore a hat.

This store was filled with a fantastic choice of hats of all kinds. I tried on several hats, found some that I liked and sent pictures to my fashion critics, Jeannie and Laura, to get their opinion on my choice. Cherie, the store associate, described the materials of hats I picked, and how to keep them clean.

I asked Jeannie to meet me at the store and get her opinion on my final choice. Finally, after a long 15 or 20 minutes of going through all these hats, I picked the bronze colour panama hat.

This is how to take a picture, with your phone, while looking in the mirror. Dressed for the occasion – writering or authoring or even storytelling.

The happy Hatted Writer.

Here I am, with the beautiful Hat Attack associate, Cherie.

The Batik Influencer (Jeannie) and I were soon on our way to explore the rest of the Chinese New Year-ed Mid-Valley in all its festivities. We took a lot of pictures.

What are they looking at?

The Centre Court was decorated with orange trees, everywhere. Fake trees of course.

Sophisticated. Jeannie bought me my red tee to be in CNY colours.

The Batik Influencer in her newly purchased cheongsam. She was in the right shoes, too. Notice the others with white sole shoes, too.

We spent quite a bit of time at the Gardens. Their CNY decor was all about simplicity at home, the simple living. We thought the decor was very nice.

Notice how the back props matches my hat?

Red paper messages dropping from orange trees? Interesting. Very interesting.

The pictures taken of us at The Gardens decor display are very nice. A lady helped take these pictures, using my phone. In all the pictures, the Batik Influencer looks very regal in her cheongsam.

We decided to head home after spending about three hours at the Mall. How quickly time flew. The traffic on the highway back to Subang Jaya was smooth flowing. How nice it would be if the traffic was like this every day. Wishful thinking?

NOTES:
1. K.L. or Kuala Lumpur, is the largest city and the capital of Malaysia.
2. Cheongsam or zansae, also known as the qipao and sometimes referred to as the mandarin gown, is a Chinese dress worn by women which takes inspiration from the qizhuang, the ethnic clothing of the Manchu people. wikippedia

THE ATKINSONS’ CHRISTMAS’ GATHERING THAT WAS

Not too long ago, more like a month or so; we i.e. Jeannie and I started with Christmas preparations. It was more Jeannie than me.

For starters, she put up Christmas trees, yes…plural in “tree”. Not one tree, not two trees, but three trees. There were decorations in various parts of the house that was put up earlier on.

Laura, her boyfriend, Praga; Jeannie and I had a nice pre-Christmas dinner at Chili’s. The food was good – we enjoyed it. I had a Margarita for the evening. It was kinda of o.k., could have been better. It was a good evening.

The next evening, we. meaning Laura, Praga, Jeannie and I; were at St Thomas More Church, Subang Jaya, for mass. We made sure we were early, especially to avoid a possible downpour of rain (it has been raining almost everyday. Reverend Father Simon La Brooy presided at mass. The time at church was wonderful.

One of the traditional events that we are involved in and participate is the gathering of siblings and their families at mum’s and dad’s home in Klang for dinner on Christmas evening. I think we have been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Notice the little lighted Christmas tree?

Shirley, Sarah and her boyfriend, King; were the first to arrive. We (Laura & Praga, Jeannie and myself) were the next to be at the scene. A few minutes later, everyone else started arriving.

There was a wide spread of food, including lamb and shepherd’s pie. We also had Christmas fruitcake flown in all the way from Canada, courtesy of Ray and Susan.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
Front row, right to left: Praga (Laura’s boyfriend), Laura (Jeannie’s and my daughter), Jeannie, Shirley, myself.
Middle row, seated; right to left: Susan (Raymond Arnold’s wife), Uma (Malcolm’s wife), Dad, Mum, Mabel (Terence’s wife), Sarah (Shirley’s daughter).
Third row, standing; right to left: Raymond Arnold (Behind Susan), Jay (Ashley’s husband), Ashley & Alana (both are Terence’s and Mabel’s daughters), Terence, Malcolm and King.

Malaysians – a must for their food.

The youngest and the eldest.

The youngest and the eldest of brothers.

The middle one.

The Three brothers👆

And the caroling began…

Christmas won’t be Christmas at the Atkinsons if there was no caroling. Malcolm and Jay took the lead. Everyone whipped out their phone song sheets. How convenient. No real flipping of paper pages unless you add the soundlike flipping of pages sound to your whatsapp thread when you search for song lyrics.

There was a mix of Christmas carols and non-Christmas carols – favourites.

Dad, recording with his smartphone. He’ s almost like Santa Clause. He knows who is singing in time and who isn’t. The proof is in the recording.

Everyone’s getting presents.

The singing goes on.

Christmas seemed a bit different this time round. It seemed brighter, with lots more laughter and joy. Yes, we are all slightly older this time round, probably wiser, too. Christmas with family is an integral part of our lives, I guess. We remember Jen and Nigel, who were with us in spirit; too.

Christmas with family…

CHRISTMAS AT KLCC : OUR VISIT (Pt 2)

http://leatherpotato.com/2023/12/20/klcc-christmas-prelude-to-our-visit-pt-1/
http://leatherpotato.com/2023/12/17/shes-in-town/

As we got on the northbound LRT train towards Gombak (the other way is southbound, heading towards Putra Heights); I still hadn’t reached that “Yay! let’s go to KLCC” mood level yet. I was quite apprehensive that it was going to be overly crowded. Getting on the train itself met with quite a bit of a crowd. We managed to get seats as we got in.

Throughout the journey, the train met with near full capacity status. At one of the stops, an elderly couple got on board. Jeannie and I immediately got up to offer our seats. A couple of young ladies got up to offer their seats to us; we, who were slight-ly older than them.😉

We were at KLCC soon enough. Sure beats driving down to K.L. which usually requires a lot of energy sapping concentration due to the usual heavy traffic.

The shopping mall was as expected – crowded. However, we still could move around without physically bumping into people. We walked to the happening place, where the main Christmas decorations were up. The whole shopping mall was in Christmas mode with all its decorations, music and festivities. I will always love toys. What better way to know the latest and the greatest is when they are introduced just in time for Christmas. I figure that toys are an excellent way to get kids and adults away from screens – phone screens, pad/tablet screens, tv screens, cinema screens.

Here I am 🎅👆, in the two pictures above; inspecting the gingerbread train. Got such thing, meh? (Local English for: “Oh really! Is there ever such a thing as a gingerbread train?” You may be forgiven to think that this a subtle “Teva” brand advertisement (hint, hint).

Santa was not too good this year, so he was punished to sit up in the clocktower for a couple of hours. Poor guy. He did not realise that they removed the hands from the clock face. So a couple of hours could be eternity.

Since Santa was punished, up in the clocktower; we had to send our Christmas wishes by post. Mine is a Rolls Royce Spectre (not Sceptre – that’s a clone copy) – the real thing.

No, our day is not over… yet. Taking a break from all this Christmasing…more like from all the walking.

We had to take a break from the festivities of walking the length and breadth of KLCC Shopping Mall for a while. Jeannie bought some curry puffs and other delights. Just before this break, I managed to find a writing instrument at Kinokuniya Book store for my mini folio.

The mini mechanical pencil fits nicely in the zip-lock sleeve which I keep towards the back of the folder.

The eats from “Kampong Kravers” was very, very tasty. You guys, if you ever do come to KLCC, should have a go at the variety of food they have on offer. At reasonable prices, too. Jeannie got a couple of can-packed coffees, both from the Pokka brand. Their premium rich coffee was quite nice. It did not have that bitter after taste that comes with most coffees in a can. Their Mocha was quite nice, too; though I stuck with their premium rich coffee.

Some drinks while resting. The Pokka Premium Rich Coffee is pretty good.

My wife, Jeannie; as usual, signed us up for the gingerbread decorating session. “Why, or why?”, I kept asking myself.

Some people around me may have thought I was a bit whacky, what with the waving my hand this way and that, raising and lowering it, opening it and closing; all these actions in front of my phone, sort of hand gestures with the hocus-poke us, abra-ca-de-bra magic mantra saying, trying to get the phone to do something. In this case, it was to take pictures.

When, the decorating session started, Jeannie and I were the two oldest amongst the children. Before long, we could hear kids telling their parents, “Stop helping me. I want to decorate on my own”. Those parents may have thought either their kids needed help to compete against us, or they themselves wanted to decorate gingerbread cookies but were to shy to come forward on their own. Now, they made it seem that they were “helping their children”. How mischievous could that be?

Jeannie’s work (top) and mine.

Jeannie told me that we weren’t (old word, not used in a long time. Pronounced as “weren’t”. However, locally pronounced as “wer-ren’t”) decorating gingerbread cookies. There were actually butter cookies.

My work of art, minimalist, yet edible.

That was fun. Especially getting to eat the decorated cookies after that. We were soon on the LRT train heading back towards Putra Heights, but had a stop to do, which Jeannie kept insisting we had to make. And that was to “Pasar Seni” or Central Market, where the artsy people gather to sell and buy stuff. It was only 4 stops from KLCC.

The weather held up pretty good, as we had to walk about 5 minutes (including crossing the very busy streets where vehicles do not respect pedestrian zebra-crossings at all.

Resting at the newly opened grocery store and a food court style eating place.

With a bit of patience, we managed to get across the busy street. When we got into Pasar Seni, we were greeted with a new, large grocery store, surrounded with many eating places. There was as usual, a wide variety of foods that one could choose from. Pasar Seni, besides the new grocery store and eating establishments, was as usual, a hive of activity.

Was trying to use the “magic wand” S-Pen to turn the butter cookies to gingerbread cookies. But I Kept getting a message on my phone that the S-Pen was connected to: “Unavailable. Maybe, in the next S-Pen software upgrade”.

Before long, (actually it was quite a long time), the Batik Influencer, Jeannie; had canvassed some of the grounds at Pesar Seni for what was new on the batik scene. She purchased several pieces of batik and a very traditional blouse for herself. She was happy.

I, in the meantime, came across Koopi, a new coffee brand in town. The booth was manned by Kate Poon and her mother. They were promoting their new brand (at least to me, it was new) by giving out taste samples.

Kate is a very approachable person. She was full of passion for her product. She was not trying to sell coffee. She was promoting an experience, a wonderful experience at that. A business that she runs with her father. She comes from three generations of kopitiam business. From the samples I tried,I liked the coffee. I purchased the different types of coffee they were promoting. Keep a lookout for my review on Koopi coffees.

We had to make our home as it had been quite a long morning and afternoon expedition. The train ride back home was not as crowded as when were we heading to K.L. We reached home with just enough time to freshen up and meet Laura and her boyfriend, Praga; for dinner.
